Had the stinky tofu, oyster vermicelli and deep fried chicken and pork monster bowl for lunch yesterday, the stinky tofu had small portions, not seasoned enough. The oyster vermicelli was served lightly warm, not hot. Due to the starch inside, it started to become gooey within a couple minutes . The bowl had a large portion, but besides the meat and the rice, the garnish was cold, you can feel different temperatures in your mouth! The overall experience was disappointing, we saw a lot of recommendations but didn't feel that it is worth trying. Both me and my partner had flatulence right after we finished our lunch there, please be aware of your quality control. At least serve your food nice and hot, it's not a difficult thing to do, isn't it? Also, please note that your customers leave comments to help you to understand the situation we're having, don't ignore these comments unless we're saying something wrong.
Saw the reply from the restaurant: Let me tell you something, I don't usually give such opinions about the restaurants, but you've mentioned that the temperature of the food had reached the food standards, excuse me, they taste warm, not even hot, what do you mean you can make it extra hot if it's not hot at the first place? And seriously? Rice bowl with cold garnish? It's not even a poke rice bowl with raw ingredients on top! Ice cold corns, ice cold cabbage, only the cold radish makes sense! How would you feel when you eat at a restaurant with different temperatures in one...
Read moreIf you have ever visited Taiwan, the ‘small-eats’ (小吃) culture in city night markets (夜市)are something of a spectacle showcasing local lifestyle and their love of food. The food varieties vary from market to market within Taiwan, but there are certain items that are particularly representative of Taiwanese food and preferred flavours — namely dumplings/baos, fried sweet or savoury meats or desserts, to chilled/custom-made teas/drinks.
Lucky for us living in the lower mainland, we needn’t travel 13 hours in air to get to delicious Tawainese small-eats places or night markets. CHJ Bistro (周鶴家), in the heart of town center of Steveston, Richmond, BC, brings authentic and delicious Taiwanese foods and drinks to you right here in Canada.
We had the chance to visit CHJ last week and tried out many delicious food from their extensive menu. Here are the awesome items we enjoyed,
CHJ “Roller“ Combo : Beef Roti Rolls, Chili and Marinated Eggs , Deep-fried Stinky Tofu, Boss Bento with Braised Chicken, Taiwanese Hot Dog in Rice Sausage, Savoury Fried Party Mix of Chicken and Fishcakes, 2 House Drinks (Taiwanese Pineapple Tea &Winter Melon Tea) Loaded Gua Bao with Braised Pork Belly and Steamed Buns Tainan Sticky Rice Mega Meat Dumpling with Tapioca Dough
This yummy meal is enough for four and the flavours are true to Taiwan’s unique seasoning and tastes! Our recommendation is for you is to visit CHJ soon and you will enjoy with their foods and drinks as much as we did! 讚啦!

Read moreThe flavours at this restaurant are some of the best Taiwanese I've had in recent memory.
We had the deep fried stinky tofu (it's not on the menu, but you can ask for it) and it was delicious. It's not as stinky as the stuff we ate in Taiwan but it definitely has some stink to it, it hit the spot and we'd come back for it the next time we are having a craving.
We also has the oyster pancake which took a while to make but it came out hot and fresh and yummy. It could probably have used a tiny bit more of the sweet sauce but we were delighted with the texture of the pancake. (Which is really glutinous if you're looking for the authentic stuff).
Lastly we shared a beef shank noodle soup. The soup was super yummy and the right balance. Noodles were tender and very slurpable. We must have been very hungry as it felt like it disappeared kinda quick when shared by 2 people so I'd suggest each person can order their own to avoid fighting.
Only area of improvement was that food came out from the kitchen at a slower pace than we would have liked, but we certainly appreciated the dedication to the flavors and the authentic Taiwanese foods that came out. We will come back for sure.
COVID-19 protocols seem pretty good here, although I'd keep my mask on while seated unless I'm eating. This place has only been open for a month as of this writing and we hope...
