This experience was profoundly dissapointing - the most unsatisfactory iced-matcha latte I've had. I've been leaning towards iced-matcha lattes to incorporate some more matcha in my diet. This has been inspired from a yoga retreat I've returned from, and am excited to keep some of the "zen" and "calming" pieces going. I've frequented the St. Lawrence market since I was a child, and I haven't gone to this coffee spot often, so I thought I'd try out the matcha latte here. Unfortunatly, to begin with, there is false advertising. Their board reads $5.95 for a matcha latte, and does not list a price for "iced". Irrespective, I assumed it would be around the same price. I was largely dissapointed, it wasn't until after they gave it to me, they informed me it was $9.05 because there was "more milk" than in the smaller warm cups. I'd agree the cup is bigger, but the excess capacity is filled with ice, not milk. My understanding is that ice shouldn't cost $3.10. Not only that, there was a long crowded line, and it was unclear where to order and where to pay. When I finally ordered, the patron walked back to find the milk. Tossed it in a cup. Found matcha, whisked it for 5 seconds, and tossed it in a cup. Then gave it to me. There were chunks everywhere. I may as well have stuck out my tongue into matcha powder itself. I forced myself to finish it since, in this economy, I'm going to finish a $9 drink. I will not be returning to this establishment. This was embarassingly terrible service, quality of drink, and severely...
Read moreThe coffee they roast is of moderate quality, but does not compare to that of specialty roasters in the city. I consider it to be good value for money, at around half the price of top quality coffee. This comment does not apply to their most expensive coffees such as the Hawaiian and Jamaican, which i did not try.
I have a suspicion that the roast dates they post on the chalkboards are incorrect. I got coffee that was apparently roasted two days before and there was almost no bubbling of CO2 on contact with water. It also wouldnt hold full pressure in a commercial grade espresso machine despite a clean looking puck and very fine grind. It really behaves physically like coffee that was roasted several weeks ago. It may be that they add new batches to the top of old batches in the dispenser so that you aren't always getting the advertised roast date. The fact that they store the coffee in open air dispensers also likely...
Read moreI always come here for tea/coffee when visiting the market. The service is typically just ok but yesterday it was unbelievably bad. The woman at the counter gave no eye contact and when she told us the tea we wanted ran out, she mumbled this information. She could not speak directly towards us. Additionally, when we'd asked for a tea and a hot water instead of two teas since the other variety ran out, she didn't know what to do then turned to another employee about whether to charge for the water. There was miscommunication there for us to hear, then she ended up charging us 50 cents for hot water. She was very unhelpful and removed from the interaction. Bad vibes, but the coffee...
