I have been waiting all weekend to write this review. I absolutely love this restaurant. This is my first time in Toronto as an adult (I’m 30) and I was here for a fitness conference I plan to attend annually. Ruby Soho was one of my first restaurant experiences.
So I’m allergic to honey - albeit a mild allergy, mostly just makes me uncomfortable with itchy throat and congestion, and sometimes can be serious - but still allergic. My travel partner is celiac and has a dairy allergy. They were very acknowledging about our allergies.
I ordered the pork sliders which I’ll say - holy crap were delicious. But a (I assume) manager rushed out really quick to let me know that they had accidentally put honey on it after I had already taken a few bites. It’s a really random and weird allergy which I know so this happens from time to time and was thankfully not super serious. They profusely apologized and swapped my meal.
Now listen, I’ve had this happen before. Usually I get the equivalent of an “I’m sorry” with a shrug and new food.
I have to say… the level of service and care that came from this moment absolutely blew me away. Especially my friend who has much more serious allergies than me (she would be really sick) we were completely floored. The manager apologized, the server (who was SO adorable and sweet) apologized, they brought us free sparkling wines as apologies and did a couple of other things that went totally above and beyond.
That level of customer service is completely unmatched by any restaurant I have ever visited.
Aside from all that, the drinks were perfectly made and the food was DELICIOUS! Even my honey-free sliders! Still so good.
We returned the following night for more drinks and I attached the photo of the cutest and yummiest paper plane drinks. The servers tonight were also so lovely.
While I know screwing up an allergy is very serious and for some can be deadly - it does happen. But I could tell that this business takes it personally, and seriously and I appreciated every moment of this experience.
I will be back next year for sure (hopefully sooner) and will recommend this restaurant location to everyone who says they are...
Read moreI’ve been coming to Ruby Soho for years, and it used to be one of my favorite spots in the city. It had that balance of fun energy, good food, and fair prices that kept me coming back regularly. Unfortunately, the place has changed, and not for the better.
The menu recently got a updated, and the changes are not what regulars like me were hoping for. Portions have noticeably shrunk, and the quality has dropped across the board. The fries, calamari, and poutine, staples I’ve ordered countless times, they are just not the same. The fries are different they went from nice bar fries to cardboard tasting mcdonalds knock off fries, the Calamari has significantly shrunk in size and doesnt taste the same, and the poutine has also shrunk and jow uses the same cardboard fries. Meanwhile, the prices have gone way up, which makes the decline in quality sting even more.
I also found out from speaking with one of the employees (who I won’t name for their own job security) that a lot has been happening behind the scenes. The live DJ they used to have on weekends has been scrapped for an AI-generated playlist, which is about as soulless as it sounds. Management has changed hands multiple times, and there’s a new chef. According to staff, not everyone is happy about the direction things are going. Many are worried the menu and atmosphere will continue to drift away from what made Ruby Soho special in the first place.
It honestly feels like the brand is losing its identity. Instead of being that lively, reliable hangout with personality, it’s becoming just another generic spot trying to cut corners. It’s frustrating to watch as a regular who supported the place for years. I hope they figure things out soon, because the Ruby Soho I loved is...
Read moreAlways liked King St W for the crowd and everything so we decided to go again. Last time it was a really good service and that made us go again, but not only were we disappointed by the service, but also from what happened there. Well, that was the last time we are going to that place. We were a table of 6 and we were having cocktails and small dishes to share. The bill was extremely high. We were charged almost $900. First of all, we ordered a bottle of wine and they said they don’t have it, we ended up having another one, but at the end we were charged for both. If we weren’t sober or didn’t check the bill that would have been paid even though it was never consumed. It wasn’t a cheap bottle, it was almost $90 after tax and tip. We were charged for good quality alcohol such as casamigos reposado or grey goose but was given bar rail and we can tell because we have all been in the serving industry for many years. Def wont recommend it as a place to go if u want to have a nice time with your friends. Didn’t want to make a scene by asking for the manager but i am pretty sure that we were overcharged by at least 200-300$. We don’t have a problem with how much money we spent, but we felt we got scammed by the bar. To sum up, 6 people you end up spending $900 and we are all sober, drink bar rail alcohol and have one of the worst nights. A night to forget and lets see if the management contacts us or they know what goes on and don’t care or...
