Sushi Gen is located inside this little alcove looking area, where a bunch of another shops/restaurants are located inside of. Kind of like an alleyway of sorts. There's a sign at the entrance, above at the arches. They're not located at the corner of the street. We went on a Sunday afternoon, just past 2 pm.
From the outside, the restaurant already looked unique: They had these "Japanese lantern/sign things" going down vertically, connected to each other (sorry, don't remember what to call them). These decorations were on the other side of the glass. The entrance had a little decorative personality type items behind the glass. Their lunch menu out front.
Inside, on their walls, they had these huge/enlarged pictures & prices of their menu. This menu wall leads down into the hallway where the restaurant's washrooms were. The doors of the washrooms has a little decorative "women's/men's" icon on it. Probably the most unique one I've seen so far. The restaurant itself feels like I've stepped into an izakaya of some kind (never been in one, just seen so many videos/photos), but like "contemporary", as they put it in their Google Maps description. It feels like they're trying to recreate an alleyway that's filled with restaurants/izakayas or something, considering the decor and the placement of them.
The menu is a physical menu. It was a very pretty menu (no clue why I didn't take photos here). My friends ordered 1x Maki Party Tray ($35.00) to share between them. One of my friends also ordered 1x Takoyaki (forgot to take a photo, he downed it so fast). Our waitress thought that the friend that ordered the party tray was going to eat all 38 sushi roll pieces by himself. Her facial expression was funny. We reassure her that the party tray was going to be shared between the two of them.
After my friends finished their first Maki Tray, they ordered a second one... And the reaction from our waitress was priceless. She was surprised and confused. She asked them to make sure - like really sure if they wanted to really eat another 38 sushi rolls between them.
I ordered the Premium Box ($23.99 - bento set), which comes with a Salad, Miso Soup, 3pc of Cucumber Roll, 3pc of Salmon Roll, 3pc of Salmon Sashimi. I also ordered 1x Edamame ($6.99 - appetizer).
First thing we noticed is that the food is really good. Quality wise - it's the most best sushi/sashimi/takoyaki we've had. We're coming from eating at AYCE sushi buffets (all for that saving money). My friends enjoy their sushi, however they avoid the avocado. They do try to pawn off the avocado sushi roll to me.
My bento box was so much larger than I expected. And so were the Edamame appetizer. For the appetizer, I was expecting one of those regular, small bowls. I got a heaping platter. 10/10, best appetizer size ever. For the Premium Box, you get to choose which protein you want in your box. There's a selection of: Salmon, Chicken, Beef, Beef Ribs... And maybe a 5th option, but I can't remember. I went with Salmon. Again, I didn't expect such a larger salmon to grace my presence... Well, the tempura was huge, especially the shrimp. The orange looking sauce in the center of the bento box is sweet and sour sauce for the Spring Rolls. The Salmon Sashimi was the most thickest, most fat, sashimi I have ever seen in my life. We're all so used to seeing thin to very thin sashimi. The vegetable tempura was delicious. Dipping the tempura into the ... What I assume to be the tempura sauce, was very tasty. An added layer of depth in flavor. The salmon sashimi was very buttery and creamy. Texture was smooth. Didn't have a fishy taste/smell. Also didn't make my stomach upset a few hours later. The cooked salmon was cooked to perfection in my eyes and to my taste buds. The skin was nice and crunchy. Crispy. The vegetables underneath was pretty good too. Slightly on the saltier side as it has been sitting in its own salty soup liquid.
Overall, this spot shot up in my favorite go-to places. Very good quality Japanese food, prices are actually decent, quantity was...
Read moreHad a very bad experience. I get off work and head to sushi gen to pick up my order I made on ubereats a few days prior. I get a missed call on the train 13min before pickup time while on the train. I get off the train and listened to the voice-mail and ubereats called me on behalf of the restaurant to cancel my order thinking it was duplicate. I ordered it a few days before and the restaurant had all day to call me but didn't until the last minute when I am making my way there. I was very frustrated and ubereats Lynn and the restaurant for canceling without my permission and did not even try to call me again to confirm my order. The lady told me to order through her again instead of the app and they can make it in 5minutes. I ended up ordering again but lost my discount code which was frustrating. I felt like the lady at sushi gen canceled on purpose so I would order through them instead of ubereats. The restaurant could have waited for me to arrive to confirm the order if it o ly takes 5minutes to make 4 dynamite rolls. I am very disappointed. I ordered because of buy 1 get 1 free on ubereats and the restaurant could have ripped me off easily by telling me to order through them. Stay away. The food is not that good either. Not authentic.
Edit: the manager reached out to me and offered me 2 rolls. I ordered another 4 rolls there. I am giving the restaurant one more chance. I appreciate the concern and they resolved my concern. I still have no received a reply from ubereats regarding how Lynn treated the situation. Thank you Cecilia...
Read moreReview for Sushi Gen is based on experience from food delivery.
Located near St. Clair and Yonge, Sushi Gen is a great place to grab some delicious Japanese food. If you live nearby, please also consider ordering delivery from them!
In doing this review, I've already ordered twice from Sushi Gen via delivery and both experiences have been very positive, 5 stars all around. Here is a quick summary/overview of the food.
Images show:
Chicken teriyaki dinner - generous helping of teriyaki chicken with rice, salad and miso soup. What I find makes Sushi Gen's teriyaki chicken a bit more elevated and tasty (especially from a food delivery perspective) is that the chicken is grilled with the skin. This adds flavour and depth to the chicken that I don't often get at other Japanese restaurants. The teriyaki sauce comes separately packaged so the chicken stays crispier and holds its texture better for the car ride to your place. Underneath the chicken, you also have a generous helping of mixed vegetables (bean sprouts and broccoli) which also helps to balance out the meal.
Dynamite rolls - these dynamite rolls are what you expect to get! Delicious but I particularly appreciate that there isn't too much rice in these rolls so you can really enjoy the filling! I could eat a million of these dynamite rolls.
Sushi Gen is a great place for some great Japanese food. This is one place I'll definitely continue to visit in person and...
