I had such high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. I love Korean food, and I was especially excited to bring my boyfriend here since it was his first time trying it. I had been raving about chicken katsu, particularly how much I love it at Mr. Tonkatsu, so I wanted him to have a great first experience.
We ordered the Sweet Potato Cheese Chicken Katsu, Rose Chicken Bokki, and Sweet & Spicy Fries. Right away, the portions were disappointingly small—especially the rice that came with the katsu. We expected the sweet potato to add some sweetness, but we weren’t prepared for it to taste like powdered sugar and frosting. It was so overpoweringly sweet that I couldn’t even taste the chicken katsu itself. My boyfriend, being the polite person he is, quietly ate it and even said it was good—but I know he was just being nice. Normally, he orders a second entrée, but this time, he barely finished half and took the rest home.
The Sweet & Spicy Fries were another letdown. We expected a balance of flavors, but instead, they had the same sugary frosting-like sweetness, making them completely inedible. We took one bite each and left the rest on the table. The only thing I somewhat enjoyed was my Rose Chicken Bokki—it tasted good, but after all the overwhelming sweetness from the other dishes, I couldn’t fully enjoy it. Even then, the portion was so small that after adding two toppings (mozzarella and spicy fish cake), it still felt like too little for the $24 price tag. I finished it under 10 minutes and was still hungry. Even with extra toppings, the small pot barely held enough—not worth the price.
What makes this even more disappointing is that I chose this place for my birthday dinner, and I had done my research beforehand, reading reviews and getting excited. My boyfriend doesn’t usually venture outside his usual meals, but he had been open to trying new things like hotpot and other Asian foods. Unfortunately, this experience completely turned him off Korean food, and now I’m hesitant to take him to another Korean restaurant.
I really wanted to love this place, but the flavors, portions, and overall experience left me wishing I had gone...
Read moreBeen here several times over the past year and it’s been consistently great, my favorite spot for tteokbokki in the city.
I’ve seen several recent reviews mentioning small portion sizes. However, as each baseline tteokbokki bowl is very cheaply priced at ~13-17$ before tax, their tteokbokki dishes are designed with the customer adding toppings in mind. These toppings add to the price, but in my opinion, are necessary to bulk up the dish and for taste.
We ordered the mild spicy black bean chicken bokki (16.99$) with added toppings wide sweet potato vermicelli (3.99$), fish cakes (2.99$), and mozzarella cheese (2.99$). The other dish was the mild cream mala tteokbokki (12.99$) with added toppings wide sweet potato vermicelli (3.99$), and cheese balls. Mild is just slightly spicy, but personally I think mild or regular spice level is enough to let the flavors of the dish shine through!
The bowls are very wide and decently deep, and we both struggled to finish our bowls and packed leftovers. The black bean sauce was rich and slightly sweet, and is my personal favorite sauce. The cream mala sauce did not have any numbing szechuan mala flavor, but the added chilli oil was delicious nonetheless. The melted cheese on top is a must! Deliciously smooth, a little sweet, and pairs so well with the chewy wheat-based rice cakes. Love that the cheese balls have mozzarella cheese inside instead of the odd tangy cream cheese filling the bb.q chicken chains have.
Overall, this place is so delicious and worth it for the price, and I love the customization with adding toppings (which I think some reviewers new to the restaurant may not be aware of)! The atmosphere is great as well, with an astronaut space theme, and 10$ off if you pay in cash! Would highly recommend this place for Korean comfort food/street...
