Have not been to Banana Leaf Davie St Vancouver for 2 years and had a great meal and experience last time. But not so this time, we ordered the 12 course tasting menu. First round all came at once, the tom yum soup was good but all the other dishes to be served hot were stone cold and chicken skewers were dry not moist which was unfortunate. We asked that the balance of the meal be more paced and the waitress said no problem she would check on our preferred timing. Sounds reasonable you would think but once we said we were ready it all arrived once again as 6 dishes at once with all stone cold. The fish fillets were inedible, chili lobster was tough near inedible and prawns looked a long time since they were fresh and the samba beans were lifeless. At that point we had had enough of these below par dishes that were obviously prepared well in advance and sitting until cold then served. We asked for our bill and declined desert as we could not be subjected to further indignities and expected to pay $112. for this sad excuse of a meal. In the waitress defence she went to management to voice our complaints and came back with a 22% food discount so we only took the rice and beef curry the rest was not edible. A restaurant with real management would have had the manager out in moments to address two customers concerns who ordered their premium offering. Not the case this poor excuse of a manger sent the waitress out to do what was his job. We have no iI’ll feelings with the waitress she has the unfortunate task of working for owners or a franchise who does not care about customer satisfaction or their business. In these post Covid times it’s a shame to see what was a great restaurant be brought to this level because of kitchen staff and ownership that simply does not care that’s how restaurants fail. Read moreI live near here and had been many times and yet every time something goes wrong more than the quality of the food, which is usually just ok. This last time it was a meal where the cooks left a jalapeno pepper in the middle of the plate which of course with low lighting I ate without knowing. There was no heat warning on the dish and I left drinking nearly 6 L of water to get the burning down. And I actually don't mind a bit of spice... But that effectively ruined the rest of my meal and the date I was on as I couldn't eat anything else and a good 50% of what I ordered ended up in the garbage. I am basically done with banana leaf for good. I don't know if it's the Management's fault for not training or coordinating people but I have never left here being happy and I have been in the area for 10 years... Also considering the price of the food it's not actually much better than food court quality. Sure it's okay but it is not remotely close to $20 a plate of quality. This place does not deserve the reputation that it has considering there are many more options that are more authentic and less commercial than this spot. If you are new to the area and you want to give it a try, go for it but don't believe there is anything authentic or original about it. Having said that I have been to other locations of banana leaf that have left me much more satisfied. I would easily go to any of the other locations as they do make some fantastic Roti. I just think the one on Davie is either cursed or...
Read moreHow did I not discover this place sooner??? Came here for the first time on a Saturday night with two friends. I had made reservations but there were plenty of seats available. We were seated right away by the window. The servers were very attentive, frequently stopping by to fill up our water, but not overbearing. After we finished eating, they brought the bill and left us to chat for around half an hour without disturbing us! Very nice, as some places loom over you until you leave. We each ordered separate dishes. One got the Pineapple Fried Rice, which was enormous. The other ordered her favorite - the Nasi Goreng. And I ordered the Singapore Laksa with mild spiciness. It was delicious and the portion very large! I would have liked a bit more shrimp, but the amount of seafood and meat was decent for the price of the dish. The coconut milk broth of the soup was incredibly fragrant and delicious. It was exactly what I needed on a stormy evening. I also ordered a lychee mojito because it was something unique. I hate spending money on drinks, especially since it is almost the same price as the meal. The drink was served in a large glass, and was not too sweet; definitely something to try! Definitely recommend this place. They have many deals during lunch, happy hour, and...
