I usually really like Bean Around the World coffee shops but my visit here was just okay. It was on the good side of okay, though, where I almost feel bad about leaving 3 stars but can't really justify 4. The positives: Very friendly service and homey atmosphere Awesome rustic lemon meringue cheesecake and good decaf americano (not the strongest, but well-rounded flavour and not bitter) Good prices (sandwich + dessert + coffee for $19) Wide and interesting selection of baked goods like scones, loaves, muffins, etc Good variety of GF baked goods (that looked really good), stored separately from the other baked goods. Not sure if any of the lunch stuff is GF though. The mixed: Egg salad sandwich: great egg salad, but could've used greens of some sort and/or a heartier bread. I found it a little plain. But then, it was only $7. The negatives (these are mostly personal/nitpicky) They forgot to put my sandwich on when I ordered and I waited 20 minutes before going up and waiting in line again to ask them about it. They were apologetic and it was ready quickly after that, less than 5 minutes. I did not observe this happening to anyone else so it is probably not a common occurrence. They only have disposable cutlery despite having real plates and mugs. Not everything in the display case is labelled and it's not obvious what some things are just by looking. Given how the other locations I've been to have such good vegan and vegetarian options, I was surprised that this location had nothing vegan except drinks. While I was underwhelmed by this shop in some aspects, it also has a lot going for it, and I'd give it another chance if I was in this...
Read moreOur first visit and likely our last, but not necessarily because of the food. My guest ordered the grilled cheese sandwich, which by all accounts was done as expected: toasted on what appeared to be freshly made bread. So far, so good. I ordered the Reuben sandwich. I received a toasted faux Reuben: corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and... mustard. Not realizing this and assuming that the sandwich would have Thousand Island dressing, I asked if I could get some mustard on the side for dipping. The response: "We're not allowed to ask the kitchen for anything." Hmmm, okay...?? As for drinks, my guest ordered a cappuccino, which by all accounts didn't appear to be a cappuccino, but tasted okay nonetheless. I had a medium roast coffee, which I was able to drink as presented...no dairy or sweeteners, and I liked it...so there's that. Lastly, as other reviewers have noted, this location is narrow, which means you can get pretty close to other guests. We had the pleasure of being joined by a gentleman who clearly enjoyed picking and eating his nails versus the food offerings. So, if you decide to stay for your beverage or food consumption, choose your seating location wisely...you never know what unexpected morsels may land...
Read moreI was here around 1:20 pm on Dec 6th, 2020. I ordered a latte and Americano.
The Americano was too hot to hold even with a sleeve. Once I got to my car, I put the coffee down as it was extremely hot. I picked it up after waiting for a couple of minutes. It spilled on my hand as the lid wasn't properly sealed. It was burning hot and burned my hand. I screamed in pain and asked my husband to go back to the cafe and ask for some ice. I was in pain for the rest of the day, and the day after. I'm glad I didn't take a sip as it would have burned my mouth.
In my opinion, any beverage should be served at a temperature that the customer can take a sip right after it's served, unless asked otherwise.
I sent a complaint email to the head office on Dec 7th, 2020, and was told the owner/manager of this location would reach out to me. I gave them more than a month to respond. NO RESPONSE, NO APOLOGY from the management WHATSOEVER.
Would NOT go back to...
