The Quinoa Kale Salad with trout was quite good.
The trout was so juicy that it melted in my mouth and perfectly seasoned. Not too much to overwhelm and not too lacking for it to be ....blah. The kale was fresh, crispy and tasty.....if you've ever bought kale to store in the fridge then you know.....it's almost easier to launch a rocket into space than to keep that stuff fresh after three minutes in the fridge. The quinoa was cooked just right.....I personally still don't know how to cook quinoa right...it either comes out like stuff you could cement bricks with or sand. Well....they got it right. The sweet potatoes were nice and and seasoned with a tiny bit of cinnamon....I like cinnamon on pretty much everything.....so that put a smile on my face as I was not expecting it.
There was a sauce that came with this dish which they thoughtfully added on the side for me as my order was to-go. It had little dijon seeds and a really tasty flavour profile adding a herby finish to the salad.
With Vancouver prices on the rise in pretty much everything I wasn't surprised that this tasty salad cost me $19. However, this price range for this salad was more than fair as it was not only tasty but more than plenty.
I don't have much of a sweet tooth but decided to try their baked goods and went with the apple raisin muffin. When she opened the display to take one out, the smell of the muffin nearly blew me away...not exaggerating. It smelled like I had just opened the door to the oven in the back where they cook that stuff. Seriously. When I got home, let's just say.....the poor muffin never saw me coming......inhaled it. One thing to mention about this sweet was at first I thought it was slightly uncooked in the middle but after more examination....(yes, I examined a muffin!).....it was the moisture from the raisin that caused the slight precipitation in the middle. I can still taste the muffin......ok....moving on....
I mean..the lunch experience was wonderful....great staff, great location, reasonable prices and great food. The only thing I would recommend is giving this cozy little place with great food some TLC. Clearing storage boxes out of customer sight, perhaps setting up patio chairs for glorious summer days such as today or adding a personal touch of colour and spice, which so awesomely came through from the food to represent the interior.
mmmmmm.......Trout...

I've tried this place a couple times now over the span of a couple years, and ordering consistently feels oddly antagonistic. You order at the counter like a cafe, but that's not obvious since there is no menu board. Asking how to order, to see a menu, and questions about items on the menu are consistently met with what feels like a rude attitude. You are required to pay when you place an order, and the payment terminal asks for a tip. There is no table service, so unsure what this tip is supposed to be for.
Actually ordering something results in yelling between the cashier and cook about what they may or may not "have". This is a recurring observation in other reviews. It's strange that they consistently have trouble keeping their menu in stock. It's possible that most or all of the food is probably pre-cooked and reheated, and not cooked to order. If true, then I would worry whether there is sufficient food handling safety since that is inherently higher-risk than cooking to order. On the other hand, it might just be that this place is mostly designed around catering customers who order in bulk, which their website appears to dedicate a fair amount of focus towards. In my experience in general, carering menus tend not to translate into good dine-in experiences.
The food itself is consistently bland and mediocre at best. Their menu has a lot of items like "jerk" and "shawarma" that should have strong flavors from spice and herbs, but none of that comes through. Partly to blame is the food is not very hot, and not salted enough, both of which contribute to muting...
Read moreWent there today for coffee with my wife. We rarely get the chance to go out for coffee but since we had an appointment downtown that ended early we decided to walk around to find a place that looked interesting.
We didn't want to go to Blenz (I now wish we did) so we kept walking then saw Heirs Pears which looked interesting. There was a sign that said Pallet Coffee which is what I thought the name of the cafe was. Anyway we went in and got a Latte for my wife, large drip coffee (medium roast I was told) for me + a 3 berry muffin.
My drip coffee was the worst coffee I've ever had in Vancouver. So weak and thin without flavour. I didn't drink it and regret not saying something. My wife who likes weaker coffee said it tasted like pee. Her latte was just okay. The muffin was very cold and slimy. I've had a lot of muffins in my life but this one was so wet and slimy you couldn't break it apart without having to wipe your hands with a napkin. It was the worst muffin I've ever had in Vancouver. I regret not mentioning that either.
I thought about contacting the manager before this negative review but after reading other posts that had no reply from management I realized it wouldn't make any difference. They don't care about their customers or they would try to make up for the bad experience in the cafe. This put me in a really bad mood for the rest of the day. Extremely disappointing.
Plus the cafe had the heat blasting so much that it was uncomfortable sitting in there. We were out in five minutes.
I predict that Heirs Pears will...
