Forced to Tip? Unacceptable Encounter at Kiki Sushi
Unfortunately, my recent visit to Kiki Sushi was a lesson in disappointment, with an unpalatable main course of poor service, and a dessert of disrespectful and shocking demands for a tip.
The service throughout my meal was remarkably subpar, showing none of the hospitality and attentiveness one expects in a restaurant environment. The staff appeared disengaged and unresponsive, making for a rather frustrating dining experience.
Yet, it was the post-meal incident that truly left a bitter taste in my mouth. Having completed my payment, I was aggressively confronted with an uncalled-for demand for a tip. Not a gentle suggestion or a humble request, but a blunt statement: "$5 should be nothing for you, you have to tip." This was followed by an audacious display of reinputting this amount on the cash register and thrusting it into my view.
Let me be clear, it's not the value of the tip that’s in question. It's the principle. It's about the presumption, the forcefulness, and the sheer lack of respect shown in the handling of this situation. It was not merely a breach of restaurant etiquette, but also a violation of the guest's dignity and choice.
What I anticipated as a delightful sushi meal at Kiki Sushi turned into an unsavory experience I’d rather forget. The dish that was served that day was not sushi, but an unpleasant helping of arrogance and discourtesy. I, for one, won’t be returning and would caution others to be aware of this experience before making a...

Disastrous Sushi Night
I visited Kiku Sushi with high expectations, but left utterly disappointed.
Substandard Sushi: The sushi rice was mushy and bland. The fish was dry and flavorless. The rolls fell apart with every bite.
Unhygienic Conditions: The restaurant was dimly lit and felt unkempt. The tables were sticky and the floors were littered with food debris. The sushi chef sneezed into his hands without washing them.
Rude Service: The staff was aloof and dismissive. I had to wait over an hour for my order, which arrived cold and incorrect. When I complained, I was met with condescension and indifference.
Pricey for Mediocrity: The prices were exorbitant for the poor quality of food and service provided. I left feeling ripped off.
Hygiene Concerns: I experienced severe stomach cramps after eating at this establishment. I strongly suspect that the unhygienic conditions contributed to my illness.
Avoidance Advised: I strongly recommend avoiding Kiku Sushi. There are many better sushi options in Vancouver that provide a safe and enjoyable...
Read moreThis comment is for anyone who is picky about the tradition and authenticity of Japanese cuisine. You should ignore this if you've never been to Japan. I've been a long time Aki fan, ever since it was in that shady basement location on Albernie and Thurlow. Kiku is one of many Japanese owned and operated restaurants in Vancouver turning into 'Japanese-ish' ventures. Presentation of the food is quite good, you can tell items are set in place with intention. Sashimi are cut a bit sloppy, its pieces are much bigger than it should, which some people view that as 'value' (bigger size!), but it's just lazy since it requires fewer cuts, that's something that another 'Japanese' place on Davie does. The Chirashi bowl I got was laughable, I have never seen that dish presented with such anemic portions (for $20) and lack of excitement. The fancy plating and the new age sushi rolls are all good the rage now, but they need to perfect the traditional and basic techniques first. For the price they are charging, I'd rather have authentic food prepared with patience and mastery of the art then food served on...
