Exceeded expectations! I had questions about ingredients in the ramyun and the staff was not only totally knowledgeable about what was in everything on the menu but also very nice about it, not making me feel like a nuisance for asking. In general, they were very polite and seemed on top of things. After confirming that all of the ramyun is made with beef stock (which I don't eat), and learning that they were out of my second choice, tteokbokki, I ordered a tofu kimbap and sikhye. (The tofu kimbap itself is vegetarian but the soup is made with anchovies - let them know if you don't want the soup.) It came out pretty quickly despite there being a few orders ahead of me and the rolls being made to order. I've eaten a fair amount of Korean food but this was my first kimbap. It was very good. The vegetables in the filling were super fresh and crunchy, I really liked the flavour. Usually I wouldn't eat a single roll of sushi or sushi-adjacent food (considering kimbap a sushi-adjacent food here) as a complete dinner, but this was a really big roll and I found it filling enough. The broth served as a side was nice and hot to contrast with the room temp roll. I also enjoyed the sikhye and liked how it had a bit of rice at the bottom (I've only had sikhye a few times and previously when I've tried it, it's just been the juice). The atmosphere is kind of like a fast food place, but the food is presented very neatly on a large metal plate with “real”/non-disposable utensils, and the staff will clear the table for you once you’re finished. The shop is situated on two levels and the counter to order is on the second, up a short flight of stairs. There is seating on the lower level and the staff seems very accommodating so I’m sure you could work something out if you wanted to eat here and stairs are an issue, but that’s an obstacle to be aware of if you have...
Read moreWe've been twice already since they opened last week. This is the kind of place Vancouver needs. Good value, good quality food! The service is friendly and enthusiastic. The interior is inviting, bright and clean, and they have a good playlist.
We tried both the spicy pork and pork belly kimbap and both were perfectly seasoned and packed and so big! The kimbap comes with a light broth which is also so nice.
Also had the janchi guksu which was super light and nice and the ddeokbokki rice cakes which were not too spicy and the perfect chewy texture.
Lastly their coffee, come in massive 1 L ($3 for an Americano!) and it's actually so nice and gentle. I actually prefer the taste of the decaf to the regular, but both and good and great value.
We also tried the shikhye which was good, not too sweet. And the fried dumplings were classic, the dumpling skin tasted like such a tasty snack even on its own!
Lastly for dessert we had the red bean steamed bun hobbang. It was so fluffy and light and the red bean was not too sweet.
We will keep coming back to try new things :).
The only thing I wish they had 깻잎 option for their kimbap! And maybe a few more options for dessert. And a couple pillows for the window seat :).
Overall such a great addition to the city! So happy!
Updating one year later.
Nomnom has released a new omurice + Katsu menu for $19. Wasn't a big fan. The fried rice had a bit of a fishy taste and the Katsu was a bit too sweet and hard while soggy? The omelette egg was surprisingly yummy though.
Our favorite thing here is still the pork belly kimbap which has 깻잎~ And that's what we will be...
Read moreWas so excited to try this place and I lined up for their grand opening.
There were a few issues right away. A worker came outside to let the line up of customers know that they were having issues with some of their machines, so opening would be delayed 5-10 minutes. She then handed out umbrellas as a free gift for their grand opening.
The wait was about 10-15 minutes and we were then able to go inside to hold a 2 seater spot and go up to order. We originally reviewed the menu the night before, since we were so excited.
We tried to order tteokbokki, some kimbap to dine in and try, kimbap to take out, fried seaweed rolls, and their janchi-guksu. The tteokbokki was unavailable for the grand opening which was disappointing, since we wanted to dip our kimbap and rolls in the tteokbokki sauce.
Regardless, we ordered and waited for everything else.
The wait took a total of 2 hours for everything to arrive, even though we were 3rd in line. The entire time we were there it was very busy, and there was a slight delay with everyone’s orders.
I enjoyed the sausage kimbap over the tuna and porkbelly. The tuna was a bit on the dry side.
I would have to say I LOVE their 1L americano and their matcha was really delicious and refreshing - not too sweet, not too milky.
I'm hoping that their service and processes improve as this is a really cute spot to grab a bite and catch up with friends. The interior is...
