We ordered a combo meal with pork, chicken, and beef, to be cooked by the server on a grill built into the table.

Unfortunately, the first round of meat was all burned very badly. Completely inedible. When our server came to take the meat off the grill, he noticed this and started cutting the burnt parts off the pieces of meat. If you’ve ever tried to do this at home, you know how hopeless it is. You lose about a third of the meat and you can never get the burned flavour out of the food. Moreover, badly dry and extremely tough. (It’s not just the char, which can be pleasant in small amounts.)

We asked for him to replace the first round of meat, but he didn’t understand what we were asking. I spoke to the owner, but he didn’t understand either. After about half an hour of waiting for help, we were getting quite hungry. The grill had long since been turned off and for some reason a raw piece of meat had been placed on the cold grill and just sat there. At one point, the server admitted he was “partly to blame.” I asked if I made a mistake, and he said no. I’m not sure who he thinks shares the other part of the blame.

Well over an hour after we ordered, when the hot side dishes and long gone cold or were eaten without meat out of hunger, the grill was turned back on and fresh meat was cooked for us. No explanation or apology was offered. We were never assured that we got all the meat we were paying for. I still don’t know if we did or not.

Here’s the kicker: this exact situation has happened to our group twice (once in 2019 and once in 2024). Both at Sura. “Fool me twice, shame on me.”

I know what you’re thinking. We’re supposed to cook the meat. It burned because I neglected the grill. I thought of that and asked. I was told not to cook it. You’re now thinking we should have flagged down the server. We tried. Eagerly. To the point of standing up and looking around for him. I genuinely can’t figure out what I could have done differently here.

To their credit, the decor is beautiful and, when it was finally cooked, the food was delicious. It’s fairly expensive but if the service was even average I’d recommend this place. Scratch that. I’d go back if the service was BELOW average. This was something else. So bad we just...

Arriving at the restaurant at 7:30 PM, well within their stated hours of operation, my party and I were shocked when we were promptly denied service and asked to leave. This abrupt refusal was both unexpected and unwarranted, as we were eager customers looking forward to enjoying a meal at Sura. The staff's demeanor towards us was quite disrespectful, leaving us feeling bewildered and humiliated.

What added insult to injury was the fact that as we left the premises and started searching for another dining option, we noticed Sura Korean restaurant welcoming new customers inside. To our dismay, these new patrons were of Asian descent, and it appeared that they were being provided with the service we were denied. This observation only intensified our sense of disrespect and injustice.

It is disheartening to encounter such discriminatory behavior in a place that is meant to be welcoming and inclusive. Discrimination in any form is unacceptable, and it undermines the principles of fairness and equality that we expect from establishments that serve the public.

While I cannot comment on the quality of the food or the overall dining experience at Sura Korean restaurant, I am deeply disappointed by the treatment my party and I received. It is essential for businesses to treat all customers with respect, regardless of their ethnicity or any other distinguishing factor.
