Spent the day at Whistler and decided to end my night with a bite at Hunger Gather which was recommended to me by a friend. She had hyped it up so much so it was very disappointing that her recommendation did not live up to it.
First of all, the ambiance was good and everyone was friendly enough so I have to give them credit there. I think I may just have been unlucky as it was end of night or perhaps they were just a bit lacking in quality control but here is what I ate:
The Dippity Do Dat Beef Brisket Sandwich + Poutine: the Sandwich itself was quite good and flavorful. The Poutine was very disappointing though. If you look at the photo posted, I originally thought the dark bit on the left was extra beef brisket but to my disappointment, it was just extremely charred and inedible piece of their "smashed potato." Also, the poutine had maybe 6 morsels of cheese curds which was definitely not enough. I looked around to see others who ordered it and they definitely had more. I told this to one of the staff and they came back with an extra side of curds which was nice. The gravy was was too salty, I assume because it was end of night and that it must have been cooking and reducing the entire day. This was actually the first time where I did not finish a poutine in my life.
The second dish ordered was Smoked Lamb Shoulder sandwich with a side of Mac & Cheese. The menu did say that it would be served on a rustic baguette but I had no idea how rustic it was going to be. The baguette felt like it had been sitting out all day as it was almost impossible to bite into. The lamb was flavorful which was nice.
The worst part of the meal was probably the Mac & Cheese. We tasted Mac, but it was missing the cheese. This was the most uninspired and dried up macaroni that I had ever tasted. All I could feel in my mouth was dry pasta and bread crumbs. Not sure if this was a style or not but it was very disappointing especially since I had to pay an extra $5 for this side upgrade. (The overly salty and burnt potatoes in the poutine was an extra $5 as well.)
Overall, this was not the best experience. I want to one day give this restaurant another chance as everyone else seemed to have been enjoying their meals so I'm guessing this was just an unfortunate incident. However, when you only go to visit a place like Whistler once or twice a year, it is really unfortunate that the last memory you have before leaving was this...
Read moreI very seldom give bad reviews for any restaurant unless it’s terrible, and let me tell you this place terrible! From the moment we walked in no one greeting us for 5 minutes, then when someone’s finally came they asked if we’d like to be seated inside or on the patio so we went for the patio! So we sat down without anyone asking us if we need a drink or anything for at least 10 minutes! Then finally someone came over and asked us if we ordered yet and we said no cus no one came to take our order! Then she says oh you have to go to the front counter to place your order, oh great thanks for let us know lol Are we supposed to guess? 🤦🏻♂️ So I proceeded to go order from the front counter and I ordered the bbq platter for two, sounded good with lots choose from! So aprx 15 minutes later we got our food and let me tell you something as I’ve been eating bbq from many places for many years that this was honestly the worst bbq platter I’ve ever had! The brisket tasted like it was directly cooked on piece of wood, it was way too Smokey and no flavor! The ribs were awful, the worst tasteless bbq sauce I’ve ever had and that’s no joke! They say on the menu that chicken wings that come with the platter were bbq wings and I can promise you that these were not and were fried or baked I couldn’t really tell cus they were so dry and tasteless we ate one each and couldn’t take another bite! The cornbread was honestly like salty chalk and so dry I had to gulp back water to get it down! I’m sorry about this review but I had to do this cus our experience was so bad we had to walk away and leave aprx 3/4 of the platter! I will never return to hunters when in whis! $90...
Read moreI was looking for a good hamburger, and noted the great reviews for this "gastropub". I went in and noticed that the menu was placed on a table for patrons by the entrance. I noted the very limited menu offered 2 burgers, in the confusing "Sammys ( sandwiches) section, whose ingerdiants really didn't appeal to me. I opted for the Mediteranean smoked lamb wrap. The ingrediants for this dish mentioned "tabouli". Being from the Middle East, I thought it would pair well with the other ingrediants mentioned. The dish arrived shortly after, and I was somewhat dismayed at what I got. Not a hint of tabouli, rather a mixture of garden veggies simulating a failed Greek salad, maybe some kind of poor excuse for fusion food. I would ask the owners or cooks to either learn how to make a proper Tabouli salad, or please remove the term from the menu. The lamb was low quality prepared meats, shaved thin, nothing "smoked" here. The wrap itself, also was poorly executed in a toasted pita, which did not fold, being hard, so it was skewered together, to keep from falling apart. Pita bread for a wrap, should be warmed and then opened to form a pocket, not toasted, unless a grilled cheese pita is what you want. The greens salad was very nice, as was the dressing. While I was eating I noticed a number of meals including mountainous hamburgers, being prepared which I did not see on the small menu at the entrance. Had I known of the more diverse offering, my order would have differed greatly. The staff were friendly and efficient. In retrospect, I should have tried the dedicated hamburger spot...
