My dining partner and I went for lunch and each ordered a set lunch. I ordered the steak tartare. It was horrible. I called the 'waiter' over and told him I refused to eat it. I asked him to look at and if he saw anything wrong. He said no. I said "it is completely brown," and that "tartare must be fresh, and if it is, the meat is red." He said it is brown because they "use dry aged beef," to which I responded "that is complete nonsense; even dry-aged beef is red unless of course you are using the trimmings - do not lie to us." So either this guy doesn't know anything about what he is serving or he thinks that I am an idiot who doesn't know anything about food. 10 Thumbs Down for that!
I replaced the tartare with a burrata. Well, they give you half a small burrata (not the whole, so that must involve some magic) and the salad is practically swimming in balsamic 'cream', an overly used and very poor replacement for actual aged balsamic (it's a bit like the wannabe restaurants serving anything with truffle and in fact they just use liberal amounts of nauseating truffle oil (which, by the way dear reader, is not real truffle at all more often than not but a a lab synthesized substance)). Just use a little!
My main course was duck confit with mashed potatoes. The duck was tender but the skin was not crispy - it's confit duck, MAN! It must have crispy skin. It was mediocre. The mashed potatoes were a bit watery, the kind of watery one experiences with poor quality, very cheap potatoes sourced from over the border. It's not hard to do good mashed potatoes but not with average Chinese potatoes. I have tried and failed and I know how to make pommes purees - a restaurant certainly should know better! If the potatoes have a different origin then I cannot imagine what the cook has done for them to be so underwhelming. What a waste of carbs - I could have done so much better.
Dessert was affogato. They make their own vanilla ice cream in-house, the waitress-manager proudly told us (our original waiter was relegated to other guests who might not mind or hassle him for the pure mediocrity and ignorance or dishonesty he served us - I don't know which), trying to salvage a situation that had clearly deteriorated to the point of no-return. Ok, we decided to try it. In fairness the affogato was very good but the petite quenelle of ice cream was just a little too petite for the amount and bitterness of the coffee. It was also hot as blazes outside and fairly warm inside so it's hard to say if it was the cool or the desert. I am trying to find something positive to say about this place.
I should add, it was not busy when we were there so it is not as if the kitchen was in the weeds and could not cope (which is still not an excuse). A wasted Friday lunch!!!!
I would not come back here, ever! which is a shame because the venue has potential on Gough St. with one whole side of glass windows overlooking the tree-lined stairs down to Kau U Fong St.
This location deserves a much better restaurant or, perhaps B&R, since you already have the location and decent decor, why not improve your offering? The problem is, without a total rebrand, I seriously doubt that anyone who has eaten what I tried to eat would ever give you a second chance.
I cannot imagine this restaurant will survive much longer considering the number of excellent restaurants in that little neighborhood, so in the end, this place is eclipsed and outclassed...

Read moreYou guys must be paying for your reviews, there is no way this is a 4.6 star restaurant on Google. We came here for Restaurant Week during lunch. The service was inattentive and very very very slow. Your servers do not remember anything that is asked for and we even had to ask them for cutlery when our food came.
The butter for our bread was placed on the table, and we had to wait for an additional 20 minutes before the bread actually came. We had to follow up, and I suspect that our order was forgotten.
The food itself took an additional 30-40 minutes and it was clear that all other tables were already served, whether they came before or after us. Again, we had to follow up before our food came. The beef was horribly bloody, considering we had asked for medium well.
Then, dessert. We sat there waiting for another 20 minutes with what should've been a simple scoop for our dessert and coffee. Then, MORE chasing for our server to give us the bill (clearly she had forgotten). This is probably the most frustrating restaurant experience I've had in Hong Kong. As the cherry on top, your washrooms are filthy. We won't be back again, I could've gotten a better experience at a Cha Chaan Teng for a quarter of the price.
Inattentive service and...
