Another Instagram find, saw they were offering buy 1 get one free special on pasta and craft beer on Mondays and decided to give it a try.
First off, This place is located inside some back alley so if you arent careful you will miss it very easily. The back alley is pretty dark as well, and being an alley, you never know if there are any creepy crawlers around. After a long walk to the restaurant in 30c weather, you just want to sit inside a nice and cold restaurant to cool off...but nope, the AC somehow wasnt working that day or its just not strong enough. I had to constantly fan myself with the menu just trying to cool off. There are a few tower fans in the seating area and it has a temperature display on them and it was reading 30c..INSIDE. Needless to say the environment inside wasnt ideal.
Buy one get one free pasta and craft beer made up for it tho. We ordered spicy vodka rigatoni (wrong move) and lobster bisque pasta. Hindsight should of ordered something not spicy as I was already having trouble trying to cool down but the flavor was good, pasta was nice and chewy and not overcooked and was seasoned perfectly. They served 3 different Lovecraft beer, We order The Deep One which was a smokey lagar with lots of smokiness and caramel notes and The Deep Ones which was a fruity IPA. We kind of wanted to order dessert as well to finish off our meal but it was just WAAAYYY too hot inside the restaurant which killed of all the mood and we decided to just go and grab dessert somewhere else. The final bill was just under $300 for 2 pasta and 2 beer which was very good value. Just hope they fix...
Read moreI recently dined at Backstreet Oasis, a new French restaurant in WanChai, which is still in its soft launch phase. As soon as I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by a charming tree in the center, which gave me the feeling of being in an oasis amidst the concrete jungle of Hong Kong.
My friend and I sampled a variety of dishes, including the cold cut and cheese platter, classic French mariniere mussels with golden fries, fresh truffle with tagliolini, and the slow-cooked beef cheek Ragu sauce with pappardelle. We paired our meal with a 2016 house red from Bourgogne, which perfectly complemented the saucisson and transported me to Lyon with its delicious taste.
The mussels were perfectly cooked and my friend couldn't resist ordering extra bread to soak up the flavorful sauce. The highlight of our meal was the fresh truffle with tagliolini, where the combination of melted butter and truffle was simply divine. I couldn't resist savoring every last bit of it.
My friend, who is usually a picky eater, thoroughly enjoyed the slow-cooked beef cheek Ragu sauce with pappardelle and finished her plate in no time.
Despite being in its soft launch phase, the food at Backstreet Oasis is exceptional and I barely noticed that the decorations are yet to be completed. I am eagerly looking forward to my next visit to try out other dishes and highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for delicious...
Read moreI'm not really sure what all the hype is about for this restaurant. Unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing. The food was very average, and the service left much to be desired. We came to celebrate my friend’s birthday with high hopes for the pasta and tiramisu, but neither dish lived up to the expectations.
The lobster bisque pasta was particularly underwhelming—I could barely taste the lobster bisque flavor at all. While the pasta itself was cooked to a nice al dente texture, it simply didn't deliver on the promised taste. The steak was also a letdown—something I could easily cook at home. To make matters worse, the fries were lukewarm and lacked that fresh, hot crunch.
I found it odd that we had to pour our own water, which wouldn't bother me if they didn't charge a 10% service fee. As for dessert, the tiramisu was not smooth enough, and the ladyfingers didn't incorporate well into the mascarpone, resulting in a disjointed texture. To top it off, they forgot to include the birthday greeting we had noted in our reservation. Overall, I left feeling that this restaurant did not live up to its reputation, and I wouldn’t recommend it based on...
