Disappointing to say the least. Coffee good, but food is terrible. Service is worse.
Went there with high hopes since I had seen pictures on a few of my friends' instagrams. We arrived at 11:15, but was told that the kitchen didn't open until 12 for lunch. I asked if they could take my order a little bit earlier and was told to come back to order at 12. We sat and enjoyed our coffees and the books around.
When I got to the counter again to order our lunch, the cashier told me my order (panini and roasted vegetable pizza) might take longer because they were busy. I asked how that could be since I came back to the counter at exactly 12pm and the place was not even half full. He told me that there were orders placed before me. I stood there a bit baffled because this was the same guy that told me he couldn't my take order before 12, but apparently he could do it for other customers. I was told that my order could take 20-25 mins. A bit miffed already since we had waited all that time before to get food, I ordered anyway.
My wife's panini came after 25 mins. My pizza took 45 minutes. My wife and her friend had already finished their meal before my food arrived. The pizza was a basic pizza topped with celery, carrot, eggplant and canned corn. It was definitely not worth the 45 minute wait or the 55 HKD they charged. I could have whipped up something like that at home for less than half the time and half the frustration.
The food was disappointing to say the least. I understand it's a cafe and most people aren't there to eat a fancy meal, but to enjoy the coffee. But when you open a kitchen, at least ensure that your staff is ready to go, the food is pre-cut and prepped, and that your orders get efficiently out the kitchen. There is no excuse for a 45 minute pizza, especially at...
ย ย ย Read moreLove the vibe and feel of this bookstore. First off location is essential. They're tucked away on the west side of Yau Ma Tei as part of a slightly separated local community (right outside of an appt complex/school), and part of an Indie theatre, Broadway Cinema.
They've got a great selection of books both in Chinese, and English. Heavy focus on Design, the Arts, and more. They carry a lot of indie, lesser known and unknown publications, addressing politics, socio-economical issues, fashion, and more. Personally grabbed some great finds on typography in a multilingual setting.
Third, they're a pseudo-cafe/bookstore. Half of one, half of the other. When you walk in, the bookstore is on the left, and wraps around through a back right side entrance to additional materials, and other media stores. On the right side there's several tables, and a cafe (food/drink). Very indie.
Great place to drop by, grab a quick drink and do some work. Quiet enough to work. But a comfortably noise level so you won't feel like you're being a public nuisance if you want...
ย ย ย Read moreHave been patronising Kubrick for a long time since we used to live very close by and weโve not been back for years as we have moved away. We decided to visit it since we were in the neighbourhood. I was there with my partner and kid, and we ordered an ice latte and ice chocolate. As we were having our drinks, one of the staff came and told my partner that he canโt sit there as he doesnโt have a drink and we need to order 3 drinks even though it was 2 adults and a 3 year old toddler. To give some context, It was 2:30pm on a Saturday and it was almost empty with just a few tables occupied. I find this so ridiculous, if it was crowded I understand the rationale that we would be expected to order one drink each to occupy the seats. Also by that time we were almost done, as we only intended to have a quick drink and leave. Anyway this has left such a bad taste in my mouth so Iโm never returning! So typical to just follow rules blindly and not have any flexibility, lacking in any customer service. Goodbye Kubrick! Never...
