I have been to Pause It cafe for a lot of time. And here are the what I like and dislike about this cafe. I will tell you now that there's not much things I do not like about this cafe as it is fanstastic. Regardless, I will still write down here all my thoughts including what I don not like and maybe at the end I may help you out on your decision to give this cafe a visit.
Things I like:
They serve great tasting coffee. That's very important. I have been to many pretty cafes that has a lot of pretty facade but could not deliver good coffee but this is cafe is not one of those.
Good coffee at a reasonable price. Don't we all deserve a cheap price in a very expensive city of Hong Kong?-that includes coffee too! A lovely place for a coffee without hurting your wallet.
Interior Design is fantastic too-massive glass walls. The glass lets in tons of natural light so if you are a fan of bright sun you will enjoy the place but even if you dont like the bright lights, maybe you will enjoy the big view of the outside so you will not feel claustrophobic in the space. Also, during rainy days, the rain hitting the glass walls adds to the comfy ambience too.
Lots of space to sit down. This place is prepared to accomodate many people without feeling heavily crowded. I did say how I like he interior design but not only limited to the glass panels but also the tables and chairs of their choice. They have long table, short tables, bar table, couch, benches, stool and chairs. All wood and concrete thematic.
Service. I have been to a lot of popular coffee shop in Hong Kong where people gave the highest of rating for the cafe but only to be disappointed to find out that the service was very poor. Better say terrible. Haven't we all tired to pay for a service where we get asked "what do you want?" "what's your order?" "Yeah?" and with a sour face? But to my surprise, I am excited to write here that I did not experience but customer service in this cafe. Not only that this cafe has good coffee and ambience but also the service. They will not forget to great you before taking your money. Now me saying this I hope they won't change.
What I don' like about the cafe:
Now before I talk about what I don't like about this cafe I would like to remind you that I did say at the beginning, there are far more things I like about this cafe and very few I don't. I like the coffee, the service, interior design, ambience etc.. And I feel like I am nitpicking for saying the only thing I did not like. I will say it anyway because this is in no way perfect cafe. What I don't like about this place is how the same lovely interior design kept you protected from the elements outside is also keping all the noises from getting out. You can easily hear all the noises from people conversations, laughter, coffee machines, kitchen, mugs/cups clinking, chairs moving and loud music playing. All this individual sounds that accumulates easily into a bigger, compounding and constant noise that resonate inside the cafe and nowhere to go out. Slowly it will get into that when you leave the cafe you will realise how quieter the outside is than it is inside the cafe. This is no way a reflection to Pause It cafe but only my observation. And hopefully will.not affect your decision to pay a visit especially when positive things weight more than the negative.
Now the question, given a chance to get another cup of coffee would I do it again here? The answer is yes. I will get another coffee here like I always do. I won't do it if I have not enjoyed it. Now ita your time enjoy a...
Read moreSadly yet another coffee shop in Hong Kong that falls short, valuing looks over substance. I should have known beforehand by now, but looking at their menu of black coffees I had hoped it would be different.
Getting a few different things: pickled plum coffee, Cappuccino and a pour over with a Chinese bean, I had hoped to be satisfied. Total ended up being just short of 200.- which was not worth it.
The best thing was the plum coffee, which didn’t taste of coffee. The pour over was not my preferred roast, and far from my preferred brew. Using a switch and grinders I am familiar with I could only think that it would be better with a bit more recipe testing. The beans where a bit too fine (also more fines than expected from a Mahlkönig - probably needs adjusting or cleaning) for the recipe, resulting is very over-extracted coffee that was unpleasant to drink. My partner tried it and was not willing to take a second sip.
The cappuccino was beautiful. But it tasted nothing of coffee. I am unsure whether or not it was a double shot, which I should have checked, but no espresso came through. I think it was a bit too balanced as espresso, and then got lost in the milk. And the milk was bad. The taste was of cream - it’s the first time in Hong Kong I have had that specific milk taste like that. The latte art was gorgeous - I have no complaints there, but it’s sad that it’s the only good thing to say.
If you want a cute photo come here. If you want coffee then go to knockbox down the road for cheaper better coffee, or go to 7-eleven for cheaper same...
