Not up to the hype. Not worth it. (Explained in detail below)
FOOD: I expected better. Price is decent $68, but the food could be better. Love the pastry (photo seen below), but the 天使麵 and the scrambled egg cheese bagel was definitely not what I was hoping for. The 天使麵 was basically just noddles with tomato space + poached egg on top. You could buy noodles like that at a local Hong Kong breakfast place, and it would still taste better than this one at Simple life. The scrambled egg cheese bagel was mid to say the least, just some eggs with a slice of bread. Nothing special about it… coffee cost an extra $21 and the tea cup was so small. The cups they used to serve the coffee are like the ones you play with when you were young. Pastry was the only one to save the whole entire dish, or else this would be a disaster. Love the layers but still could be better.
Conclusion: not worth it.
SERVICE: (Photo below, the pink mask waitress) The waitress had a very bad attitude, i believe a good restaurant needs respectful waitress. I took the pictures of the waitress below, and they need to be fired for poor service and horrendous attitude. Not acceptable for such a highly...
Read moreSimplylife Bakery and Cafe in Shatin is now open early (7.30am) for pastry and coffee at affordable prices. We recently passed and tried their morning meal seating for the first time - not very impressive unfortunately.
Basically you queue up at the bread and pastry counter to order. Pay, pick up your coffee drinks after receiving your pastries and then find a seat.
During our visit, we had a chocolate danish that hard as a board. Didn't taste terrible but danishes should not be served like this. The apple danish was soft and tasted ok. Espresso was light bodied yet bitter. White coffee was mostly milk with a faint hint of espresso. Neither was good enough to be had without lots of sugar.
In the end, its great that Simplylife is open in the morning and to be fair, the prices are very good but they really should do better with the quality of their pastries and coffee. Sadly, Starbucks which is just across the hall has much better morning...
Read moreIt was acceptable to wait ~10mins during a hassle lunchtime. Staff were efficient and polite even under the crowded pressure. Menu gives variety options, both light or heavy options. We asked for the grilled fish and an egg florentine. Soup of the day was carrot soup. Hint of sweetness with a drizzle of cream for richness. It was served with a huge slice of baguette. Crunchy crust with soft crumb. Grilled fish was crispy on the skin. Even it was sit in the pond of sauce, it was not too rich and heavy. It was on an oily side, but okay. Nice to have some grilled side vegetables. Egg florentine was alright. One poached egg was slight overcooked without a runny egg yolk. Surprisingly filling, maybe because of the big slice of baguette served with the soup and quinoa topped. Sad to have two slices of spinach topped. Anyway, not bad. Fruit tea was pretty sweet even asked for less and no...
