Mateo´s Cartagena — Restaurant in Cartagena

This was my “home ground” while in Cartagena. I ended up feeling the most welcomed here. Excellent staff and service all around. I befriended the excellent bartender Ernesto as he speaks good English. I ate lunch and dinner here almost daily. I recommend the Arroz con Camarones and my favorite drink was the signature drink San Mateo. I made a traveling friend while in Cartagena and I brought her here and she loved it as well. They play live music at 8pm that plays from an indoor balcony and it was one of the highlights and I looked forward to seeing the band play nightly. Do not order the grilled pork! It's dry and hard as a rock, we heard the table behind us complaining about the same dish!

This is a wonderful restaurant which gave us a nice experience and delicious food (except the pork, which they changed for another dish without a problem). It was a pleasure to have Heiner as our server. He was very professional and great with our kids. The DJ was playing bangers all night long, we love how he mixes afro beats and reggaeton!!! We ate lunch here and enjoyed what was our best meal so far in Cartagena - better than Carmen. We ordered grilled sea bass (róbalo grillado) and risotto corral (beef). It took a while for the meal to come - maybe 40 minutes- but it was obvious why. The meals had been prepared perfectly. Sea bass (actually not 100% sure if that is what it was, but similar) was perfect, accompanied by grilled potatoes and carrots which were also perfect. The beef came as requested- medium (al punto) - on a bed of delicious risotto.
