Il Porto — Restaurant in Grad Hvar

My husband and I dined here this evening. We had eaten a lot of carbs travelling to Croatia and wanted some protein and salad to balance us out. We chose the fish platter for 2 to share. The very welcoming owner served us and we explained that we weren’t keen on fish bones, so he switched out the usual fish that he serves and kindly gave us tuna steaks, sword fish and shark instead along with the prawn and squid which were already on the menu. My hubby was a bit apprehensive to eat shark, but it turned out to be his favourite of them all. The fish was cooked perfectly and we had it with a side salad which was fresh and tasty. We had some of the local beer which was served in a big stein and was ice cold. The owner spent time chatting to us even though he was clearly busy. We had a beautiful view over the harbour and I couldn’t recommend the place enough. Initially I thought the main was a little expensive at €63 fir the main to share, but after seeing the huge portion of fresh fish that arrived, tasting the quality and the way it was cooked and presented to perfection, it turned out it was really good value. For lunch, we decided to escape the hustle and bustle of the town and headed to Il Porto in Križna Luka, right by the sea.

The two of us ordered homemade fish soup, zucchini carpaccio, and spaghetti in buzara sauce with clams and prawns. Every dish exceeded our expectations. The fish soup was so rich with chunks of fresh, top-quality fish that we could barely finish it. As for the buzara with spaghetti, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had. You can tell they use only the finest ingredients and never cut corners in the kitchen, resulting in the most delicious buzara you can imagine.

The zucchini carpaccio was a delightful surprise, perfectly seasoned, light, and flavorful, with a portion size just right to whet the appetite.

Il Porto is easily my favorite restaurant in HVAR when it comes to delicious food, excellent location, fair prices & no reservations needed. I have been to hvar a few times and they have a lot of great restaurants but when it comes to super authentic Croatian cooking, I give this chef the 1st place prize. The sea bass & sole were some of the best I’ve ever had in my life and my girlfriend had been coming back for the secret menu creamy Greek salad every day which is absolutely delicious and full of flavor with a creamy crem de fresh of some sort that the chef makes himself. Anyways if you want to taste the best without all the crowds in the main downtown area then take the 5 minute walk north along the beach and enjoy! Tell the waiter and chef what you like and even if it’s not on the menu they will cater to you. Also you must try the STEAK! 5 stars...
