We visited this restaurant completely spontaneously one evening after consulting Google for nearby offers in our vicinity. There was a plethora of different cuisines to choose from, but since my husband and I are particularly fond of Indian cuisine, Masala Andél was our selection. The restaurant is actually tucked away, down a slight side street and numerous appealing restaurants must be passed by in order to access. We were received warmly into the restaurant, no trouble at all despite no reservation. At first I thought we were the only customers, until I realised the restaurant area extends out the back and downstairs. We were seated in front of the bar and I noted a constant stream of customers arriving. Many had no reservation but were accepted without question, despite there apparently already being larger parties in-house. My impression of the manager is that he's very hands on with his business, extremely committed and dedicated. He was so friendly and welcoming, accomodating our two dogs with no problems. Even put tables together to give us more space. He took our orders and he was diligent with the fine details. We ordered quite a few dishes, as I have greedy eyes and like to try a bit of everything! So many vegetarian and vegan options, I was so spoilt for choice. I heartily recommend the Vegetarian Platter as a starter, although it's more than a full meal! It was so delicious, but I deliberately left much of it as I needed to ensure space for the rest of the meal. The garlic cheese naan is also a strong recommendation, as already mentioned in previous reviews. It's the best bread I've ever had, and I've tried quite a few! The young waiter (possibly the managers son??) was really attentive and helpful throughout our dining. Nothing was too much trouble and he was speedy in serving our requests. All of the waiting staff spoke in English and were all focused on their tasks and providing top customer service. I felt honoured to be there, not an inconvenience as is often the feeling in some establishments in Prague particularly. I don't drink alcohol but there was a vast range of beverages available. The homemade lemonades were particularly delicious and were made fresh to order. My husband was happy with beer and wine, which was available by the glass or as a bottle. Usual selection of Indian cream drinks, Lassy and teas, pure divine. I had a lot of leftovers from my meal which I really didn't want to throw away, so I asked the waiter for a box so I could take home. He took away my plates and returned with it all carefully packaged and sealed for freshness as a proper takeaway. I was very impressed with the professionalism. And I can confirm that the leftovers tasted just as delicious for lunch the next day, including samosa, pakora and onion baji, which so often turn greasy rank in taste after a lapse in time. Quite honestly the best Indian food I've had so far. This is a totally honest review from someone who doesn't often feel inclined to write about experiences. But I feel this restaurant really deserves the praise and I'd like more people to find this little gem out of India. On a negative note: I have to agree with a previous review about the bathroom areas. It does let the restaurant down a bit, but not enough to be more than just an observation. I imagine a renovation is already in planning stages, as it looks as though the restaurant may be having some...
Read moreI used to frequent this place often, drawn initially by a pleasant first visit. My first time here, I dined alone in the garden during summer and truly enjoyed the atmosphere. However, subsequent visits were disappointing, and looking back, I probably should have stopped coming sooner.
The second time I visited, I brought my parents. Despite many free tables, the staff kept relocating us, refusing to let us settle anywhere. Their unwelcoming and borderline rude behavior prompted my parents to leave.
Despite this, I gave the place another chance, bringing my fiancé. That visit was uneventful, which encouraged me to return a couple of weeks later for lunch. Unfortunately, this time was an absolute disaster.
We ordered two main dishes, a side, and drinks. The food was overly sweet, and the chicken in the masala was undercooked. Still, we chose to overlook it and continued our meal politely. Things escalated when we took a sip from a water bottle we had brought with us. First the waiter demanded to not drink the water- then the waiter rudely demanded we remove it from the table, despite it being just a basic tap water bottle we had carried in. We had nowhere else to put it except the table.
As alternative we requested tap water from the restaurant instead, the waiter brought it – only to later charge us for it. Upon pointing out how rude and unreasonable his behavior was, he blamed the manager, claiming these were the restaurant’s rules. However, his attitude – yelling, blaming others, and making us feel unwelcome, telling us to leave we we dont like something – was entirely unprofessional. We said to him that food undercooked, the chicken was raw, his attitude was rude and he also charged un for tap water- he agressively steped into counter trying to reimburse 20 CZK for the tap water in an aggressive manner, as though he wanted to humiliate us further.
This experience was unacceptable and left a lasting negative impression. Farewell, Masala –...
Read moreA cozy place with decent north-Indian cuisine. This restaurant serves some unique dishes that are not very easy to find in Prague - Chaats. For those of you who are wondering what a chaat is - its a name given to a group of street food that offers your palette a combination of flavors. A typical plate of Chaat consists of a base ( potato patty OR deep fried semolina, etc ) topped with flavors. When it comes to Chaats, sky is the limit. It is purely at the hands of the chef to create magic with a different variety of sauces. Masala offered some of the most popular chaat dishes from North India and all of these tasted good.
Service - (While we were there, very few tables were occupied, so the service review here is at very low loads)The service was good, speed was decent. It took us about 20-25 minutes to get our order. The staff were welcoming and the food was customized based on our requested spice levels
Ambience - The terrace was not open as it was winter. The indoors of the restaurant is a refurbished basement. The setup is rustic and simple.
Taste and Pricing - The food tasted good. We loved their chaats. They also had a jackfruit curry, which we tried - it tasted ok, not as exotic as I have back in India. The pricing and value for money is good, especially given that the restaurant has street...
