I would say we had some of the best Mexican food for Europe at this restaurant. Having had said that, it was different than Mexican food I am used to. Some of the offerings are quite unique such as duck tacos. The waitress pressured me to get their burrito as I was going to order their tacos but she said they were very tiny. I was disappointed to see the tacos were not that small - maybe 2/3 the size of what i am used to.
The burrito had boiled chicken, not grilled, which gave it an overly watery texture and there was no bite in the chipotle flavor. The rice in the burrito was boiled and seasoned very lightly and I suspect the beans were boiled in salt water and lacked the savory, smoky, pork-fat flavor I enjoy. They tasted only slightly seasoned, the way beans from a can (with only salt) typically taste. I'm used to very savory beans with the taste of pork belly in the beans. Instead of lettuce, my burrito had red cabbage, which I am sure is much more plentiful in winter in the north, however really does not taste as good as lettuce.
My son wanted chips with melted queso fresco with guacamole on the side and while the chips were good, the cheese was not melted and the chef had put salsa all over the chips even though we asked to have everything else on the side.
On a final note, they did have good fried plantain chips with guacamole. Notably that is not really a Mexican thing, but it was nonetheless good.
The atmosphere is cool and hip -it's in a slightly gritty, underground bar. I liked that aspect as well as all the rap music.
Hola Camile, como estas?
Thanks for the prompt response. I did give the feedback to the waitress about the nachos having salsa (which we did not ask for) and I believe she did not charge us for them.
I didn't give her the feedback about wishing I ordered the tacos instead of the burrito since she was so insistent they were so small (she held up her hand in an OK-sign to show me they were as big as her fingers in an"o", but my husband ordered them and they were the slightly larger than my palm). For that I would suggest better staff training. I rely on waitstaff to give me good advice and recommendations.
I also didn't give her feedback on the burrito since I thought it was fine for Europe and I knew it was not supposed to be a completely authentic Mexican burrito and culinary license would be taken such as the cabbage due to availability. I myself don't like red cabbage at in any dishes. I'm merely disclosing in my review that people should not go here expecting particularly authentic Mexican foods and the flavors and texture will be different from what you typically get when you have experienced Mexican chefs cooking your food. It could help if you list in the menu all the ingredients, such as red cabbage.
I've had some really terrible burritos in Europe, such as one that had meat, plain rice and BBQ sauce from a bottle. So as I said, this was the best Mexican food I've had in Europe. I'm visiting from California and have eaten Mexican food across the state as well as in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico. If it's your goal to provide more authentic Mexican food, I would recommend at least grilling your meats. Again, I'm a bit spoilt and I get to eat very authentic Mexican and Salvadorian food every...
Read moreI was here for my friend's birthday party - we were a party of 6, and although my friend booked for 5 he had definitely changed it online to 6, and they didn't know about the change.
The space they had for us was very narrow, I couldn't sit in behind the table because my belly wouldn't fit. Plus 5 of our party are deaf, so it was difficult to communicate amongst ourselves because we had no line of sight to everyone. So the physical space wasn't very comfortable for us.
The staff seemed to panic over the space they allocated us, but moreso because they seemed to have no experience of serving deaf customers. They were very nice but they lacked certain communication skills. On a basic level, one should just act normal and maintain eye contact and see what the other person wants to communicate. Maybe they could have a little training in how to communicate better with deaf customers. I also felt under pressure as the only hearing customer to be the interpreter, this is not cool, I am just another guest. The staff should do their best to communicate directly with all their guests.
The food was ok, I would have ordered enchiladas but they weren't on the menu. I don't have much experience of tacos but they seemed kind of small, but maybe that's how it should be. I ordered pimientos de Padron but the portion was so small it was a bit embarrassing. The beer was ok.
The atmosphere was good. The staff spoke mostly English which is fine. Mostly we enjoyed the night. I would come here...
Read moreThe food at Mæxico is excellent, and the atmosphere is cosy and welcoming. We had a lovely meal with plenty of delicious dishes and drinks, and everything from the flavours to the presentation was spot on.
Unfortunately the experience with the waiter was surprisingly frustrating. We had booked a table for five but called ahead to ask if we could squeeze in a sixth person. We were told it was fine if we could just sit tight. When we arrived and were seated, another waiter came over and said we were blocking the passageway. We explained what we had been told on the phone, but he just said it was a mistake and that we shouldn’t have been told that.
Instead of helping us find a solution (which I really think is his job), he dismissed our suggestion to move to a nearby table with “I don’t really see that helping.” When we asked what he theb suggested that we do, he simply replied, “I don’t know,” and offered no help. It felt like he wanted us to leave. Eventually, we moved to the other table ourselves, which solved the problem, and we could order our food.
The food and drinks were excellent, but the service in this case was unhelpful and rude, and left a...
