I purchased a ticket and a coffee to see a film on a Saturday. Afterwards, I sat in their empty cafe, took out my laptop in a corner and worked for a bit more than 20 minutes. In which, not a single person entered the building. A woman comes up to me and asks me to buy something or leave. I told her what I had already purchased previously and, before I could even get around to saying it, mentions that although the building was completely empty- that I wasn’t welcome. I asked her if the other employees and her supervisors didn’t want me to be in the building, having not disturbed anyone or simultaneously addressed her in any rude, aggressive, or condescending way. She said, yes. Rather than give them more of my money, I opted to leave. Perhaps I was in the wrong in this situation, perhaps I was not (I can be accepting of either), but I feel as though I don’t not have a justification in writing about this negative experience in any way. Perhaps if I didn’t love film as much as I do, I would’ve just forgotten about it but for whatever irrational reason, I couldn’t. The cinema has grown increasingly less accessible to people around the world (especially in a region of the world which can be as expensive as this one) and this experience adds on to this terrible trend. This wonderful city has many other independent cinemas worth supporting, go there instead of Grand. As a filmmaker and someone who runs a film festival, I won’t ever go here again or recommend anyone in my circle to ever come here or support this...
Read moreGreat cinema, worth a visit.
In this old cinema you'll get the sensation of this being an old place with lots of history. I feel like being in Inglorious Basterds when I enter the cinema.
One tip. If you plan on visiting this place, make sure you come early if you need to buy tickets here and/or consumption. The foyer is very crowded before movie start, and often you are stuck until people are let into the theaters. You can still buy consumption after people have entered the theaters and before the movie starts. Usually commercials + trailers before movie start lasts...
Read moreI really like the place. It's got the cool cinema aesthetic, shows some less mainstream movies, the legroom between seats is a bit on the short side, but not unbearably so. I'd actually give 5/5, but I have to withhold a star due to the cafe not selling popcorns. I'm of the firm conviction that all cinemas should sell popcorn, and the fact that I keep coming to Grande despite them not doing so, is actually a great compliment to the establishment.
Until they come to their senses I'll just have to keep smuggling in my own popcorn in a bag I hide...
