This was my second visit to Kong Volmer, though I had a moment of panic when I discovered it was no longer in the same location as last year. Thankfully, the hostess reassured me that they had only moved two months ago, and I was instantly relieved—it meant I could relive the flavors I’d been dreaming about for a year.
The new space feels bright, open, and modern, with the bonus of outdoor seating that’s perfect for warm, sunny days when dining alfresco is a must. While the old location had its own charm, the new one feels like a fresh chapter for the restaurant. Best of all, the menu remains the same, so ordering was as easy as ever.
We started with a couple of cold beers before diving into the smørrebrød menu. I love that you can choose from fish, meat, or cheese varieties, as well as the type of bread, and there are thoughtful recommendations for aquavit or snaps pairings (and if you’re unsure, the staff are more than happy to guide you).
As the portions are quite generous, we decided to share: two selections from the fish side and one from the meat. It was the perfect amount for a leisurely afternoon meal for two. The food does take time, but it’s clearly prepared with care, and worth every minute of waiting.
We enjoyed the Smoked Eel with Warm Scrambled Eggs and Herbs, which has been on my mind since last year—it was every bit as divine as I remembered. The Cold-Smoked Faroe Island Salmon with radish, smoked cheese, and lemon pearls was equally outstanding—the freshness of the salmon paired with the surprising burst of citrus pearls made the dish shine.
The roast beef smørrebrød was an indulgent tower of thinly sliced roast beef, crisp cucumber salad, horseradish, remoulade, and crunchy onions—comforting, flavorful, and beautifully executed.
My only advice: come hungry. The portions are generous, and I regretted not saving room for one of the cheese selections this time around. Next time, I’ll be sure to pace myself so I can explore even more of the menu.
Until next time, Kong Volmer—you...
Read moreJust once in a while you come across a little pearl of a place with great food and super friendly service. This was our little unexpected find in this cozy restaurant. We had a lovely waitress called Ida who just had a big warm smile and character to boot who knew all the dishes and the beers, including recommendations where necessary. They have a great concept in their menu which is called “ hapse” ( Danish for mini portion or a quarter portion) . As they have some great dishes, it means that you can still go home happy and not wonder how something on the menu tasted- because you can try a small hapse! I’ve never seen it before but a really great concept. They also have a good selection of Fyn beers instead of the classic Menu fillers. I had the SMASH Ale, a very nice pale ale and my wife had an unusual walnut beer that really smelt of walnuts but tasted great too. We sat overlooking the harbour, high up some steps on a terrace - super nice and cosy. If you’re in Svendborg you should...
Read moreWe had a selection of "hapser", an excellent option, as well as a couple of full sized pieces. The Heering was delicious, the butterfried Plaice was delicious, the Tartare was delicious, the stirred Tartare was excellent, and the rullepølse & Chicken salad were good. All well equipped with a variety of good quality toppings and served on good rye bread. The shrimp on soft bread was also good and the youngling was content. The Stjerneskud was good and the dressing excellent. Highly...
