When my wife discovered that there was a Taiwanese restaurant less than 100 meters from our hotel, I was both surprised and excited!
Right off the main square outside Palais des Papes, Hi! Bowl & Bubble has a decent amount of outdoor seating, with a very cool and stylish interior. Though the interior is more suited for takeout orders, which they do offer.
I grew up in Taiwan, and the âMomâs Specialtyâ I ordered, a rice dish with confit pork belly and black mushroom (âèç„飯â) tasted just like how my grandpa always made it when I was a kid. Itâs savory and flavorful but not heavy, served with two halves of incredibly well-seasoned and authentic soy egg (æ»·èïŒand yellow pickles (these were a real rare find to me). It tasted like home, but is plated and presented beautifully like how youâd expect in a fine-dining establishment.
My wife ordered the ginger beef rice bowl, and it was also very delicious. Itâs actually rice served with traditional Yakiniku-style beef and sunny side egg, which I totally appreciated since a good portion of Taiwanese folk cuisine has a deep Japanese influence due to having been colonized in the late 19th century for a few decades. It tasted like how a Taiwanese chef would cook Yakiniku beef in âTaiwanese styleâ.
The owners, Max and Sebastien, are both very cordial and friendly, and both spoke fluent Mandarin on top of few other languages. It was really nice chatting with them and learning more about them and their business.
We had a great time here and would recommend it to anyone craving authentic, traditional Taiwanese faire whilst they travel in Avignon. Very glad to have had an opportunity to support a Taiwanese business here...
Read moreThis place has some of the best food I had in France. After having so much French food, I wanted a change and had some Taiwanese food. The environment was amazing- the owner spoke great Chinese and so did other diners. It was fun chatting in Chinese. Food came out quick. We ordered bamboo, fried chicken, and shrimp tempura as starters.
Bamboo: Flavorful with good texture, perfect way to start the meal Fried chicken: Crispy, flavorful, and juicy. It was really well made Shrimp Tempura: The shrimp was lightly breaded and fried, the inside was juicy with an amazingly light crisp outside.
For our main dishes, we got noodles with yakitori and 2 rice dishes with different meats.
Noodles with yakitori: The noodles were extremely flavorful with some vegetables to make it fresher. The yakitori was juicy and smoky, with a sweet glaze. Perfect pair
Rice with protein: The rice had many protein options, we got beef and chicken. The chicken had a teriyaki sauce, and the beef came with another sauce that paired with it well. Along with the fried egg and veggies, it was the perfect dish.
For drinks, we got a taro bubble tea with tapioca bubbles. We got it with half sugar. It wasnât too sweet and the tapioca bubbles were nice and chewy and absorbed the tea well, it was perfect for my taste.
This place is a must try - especially if youâre Chinese...
Read moreWent on a Friday evening, abundant space for dining. As an Australian born Chinese living in a city with geneorus chinese cuisine I was craving rice and noodles in France. We ordered the stir fried curry noodles with yakitori and mom's speciality rice dish. For the rice dish, the meat cooked and seasoned really nicely, fresh ingredients. It was good but not amazing. The noodle dish tasted like it was from the asian food court. The yakitori was cooked really well. Meat was moist and good flavour. Noodles cooked well but were short in length and didn't have enough sauce or curry flavour. Both became a bit boring to eat after becuase the flavours are generic. No ramen or gyoza was available on the menu. The dishes were nice but not amazing. Good price. Good place to just eat and chat, and good enough to satisfy my cravings for asian food. I am also aware it cant compare this restaurant to a major city with...
