On a recent visit to Avignon, my wife and I had dinner at Restaurant Christian Etienne and both agree that this place is not worth the time or money. For a Michelin rated restaurant, it just does not measure up. The service was unacceptable and unexpectedly bad. For the scale of the restaurant, the service was both uneven and poorly managed. Once seated, we waited well over five minutes for a person to approach the table to ask if we would like a drink before dinner. We also had to ask them for water and during the course of the meal, this continued. Not once, NOT ONCE did they fill our water glass without it being requested. During the evening the service was both fast and slow. What do I mean? We chose the special service for the evening, which centered around tomatoes, more on the positives and negatives of that in a moment. We also selected the wine pairing to go with the meal service. So, the wine pairings were GREAT for the food, but the service of them was just plain bad! They were totally inconsistent. Meaning our glasses would sit empty for large periods of time or they would bring the next glass while we were still drinking the wine from the same course. So, good on the sommelier, not so good on the servers. That was pretty consistent throughout the course of the evening. To include the end, where after 20 minutes of inattention at the end of the meal I went to the service desk and had to ask for our check. EVEN AFTER doing that, the check WAS NEVER brought to the table. We waited five more minutes for a total of 25, (COMPLETELY UNSATISFACTORY) and then went back to the desk and waited on the check. The restaurant caveated that the service was "at the rhythm of the restaurant" or words to that effect, but the service this evening was totally unsatisfactory, caveat or not! You exist for your customers, not the other way around.
Let's talk about the food. I mentioned that it showcased tomatoes and there were some really great aspects and some really, really bad aspects. First the good. The skate wing with "bone sauce" was amazing! Mediocre? The lamb course. The lamb confit was nice, but the sliced leg of lamb what was uninspired. HORRIBLE the dessert. The dessert consisted of a tomato tart which was just not good. The tart itself was nice enough, but the tomato sorbet served with the tart was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! It was a total failure as a dessert. When we told the server, his response was nice enough that they knew they were taking a risk. Well, your risk failed. Apparently, we weren't the only table that thought so as we saw no less than two other tables return the tomato dessert that evening. To make the matter worse, they brought us another dessert that was totally uninspired. It consisted of what appeared to be yogurt, with a rose jam at the bottom and dehydrated raspberries on top, along with a fiancier and a citrus gel. My fiancier was cross-contaminated with something savory (garlic?). The only good aspect of that dish was the citrus gel. There was a fourth component, but it was so uninspiring I cannot recall what it was now.
This restaurant simply misses the mark and for the cost and the rating, it simply not worth it. I would recommend finding another restaurant for a "nice"...
Read moreWorst service. The restaurant is apparently operated by a couple. The lady was super rude and did everything with a sullen face. We do not speak any French so we were overlooked by them most of the time. They offer attentive care to other French-speaking customers while ignoring us. We sat there for one hour without any dish coming us. Even after we told them that we have a zoom meeting at 11 and really need the dessert to come, they did not give us the dessert after another 30 mins wait even if I already paid for the check. We left without eating dessert but they pretended that nothing happened. They have time talking with others at the front door for over 20mins without taking a single peak at the customers inside. This is the ONLY restaurant that I need to stand up and walk to the front desk to get the waiter every time. Not to mention I paid 300euro for this service. Edited: replying to your reply, I don’t like your tomato juice nor your cheese, why am I obligated to drink or eat it when I don’t like it? I say thank you every time you serve us food, what else am I supposed to say to you? I am not your father lmao. You left the dessert in the counter for 10 minutes. What were you doing? Waiting for us to pick up ourselves or what. We made the reservation for 7:30 with our hotel la...
Read moreA perfect dinner at Restaurant SEVIN. Staff are all warm and considerate. Food is impeccable and cooked with care and love. My gluten free spouse was well cared for, with the Head Chef personally reassuring her (having noted the advice on our booking request). The staff (without prompting) also reassured my spouse that each meal was GF. Such care. They brought her 3 types of GF bread!
There was a big family group with 5 children. Another great example of the care of the team. The childrens' chairs were set with extra blankets and cushions, colouring books and pencils. Everyone is made to feel welcome here.
The food is just sensational. The sommelier is also exceptional and we left our wine experience in his hands and I am so happy we did. We enjoyed so very many wines we would never have known to try. He took time to discuss with us - just great!
We will go back tomorrow!!! Would recommend it to one and all. I've been in France for over a month now and (without a doubt) it is my best meal here!!! Tres très Bien!!! 5 stars food. 5 stars ambiance. 5 stars service. 5 stars wine.
These folks genuinely understand hospitality. Never felt this comfortable in a restaurant in my life. ...
