The well-known bakery "Au Petit Versailles du Marais" looks very nice. We wanted to eat and drink pastries and coffee there. A young, friendly employee then told us that we could sit outside to order coffee with the pastries. The pastries are then served. As we were sitting outside, an older woman came over who was very friendly at the beginning and wanted to take the order for the drinks. The old lady suddenly became extremely rude when we tried to order in French and couldn't formulate the sentences so quickly. She turned mid-sentence and left. FYI: We are tourists from abroad. A curious situation arose after that, because they didn't bring us what we clearly ordered. Then she became even more rude. What we didn't know: the chairs and tables in front of the bakery belong to another inconspicuous restaurant next door, namely "Le Salon Marie Antoinette du Marie". The waitress actually works next door or it's her restaurant (?), but she serves the food and drinks from the bakery (!) at significantly higher prices (!!). As a customer, you can't see that! We only became aware of the higher prices at the very end when we got the bill with the name of the restaurant "Le Salon Marie Antoinette du Marie". And: In between, she even deliberately ignored us and sometimes deliberately made us wait a long time, while she talked to other guests and even passers-by in an extremely friendly manner in front of our eyes, even though we were waiting for the bill. When we confronted her about her rude behavior, the overpriced and the average quality of the pastries, she shouted at us loudly and angrily in front of all the customers!! unbelievable!! We have never seen anything like this!! It has to be said that the service in the bakery itself was friendly. We can therefore not recommend both restaurants overall, because it is simply not transparent that there are actually two restaurants with different prices for the same goods, although chairs and tables are right in front of the bakery!! In the bakery, only the prices that apply when the goods are taken away are shown. In other bakeries in Paris that we visited, two prices were always shown (for takeaway or eat-in). And one more thing: you can't find "Le Salon Marie Antoinette du Marie" on Google, although the bakery "Au Petit Versailles du Marais" cooperates with the older waiter. What a surprise... Unfortunately very non-transparent and very unpleasant stay. That's not how you treat customers! We're never...
Read moreWhat I’m rating with this 5 star is the bakery. Not the tea salon.
The owner of the bakery is a MOF, which means he won a very harsh competition to get his title. He has been 2nd to the best baguette of Paris in 2014. Now what you should take is any viennoiseries : croissant, pain au chocolat, chausson aux pommes, pain suisse. Or any small pastries : the best being the Tarte Tatin. The Paris Brest and the Mille feuille are terribly good. The quiche looked very good, juicy, generous last time I went. Some French cakes are baked to hard, you are not supposed to eat them like but with a tea or a coffee.
You come to a bakery, please choose a vegetarian option that is not a cooked dish ( potatoes, lettuces etc ) . i.e take bread items : almost everything is vegetarian then. I’m annoyed sometimes to see the bakery trying to make vegetarian dishes to please everyone, this goes against the essence bakery : which is to bake.
I have read the comments saying that they overcharge when you sit, and it is true ( thanks to Mc Donald ) because the taxes to sit or takeaway are different ( 5,5% vs 20%, btw McDonald only pays 5,5 %) Also, about the friendliness of the staff, things are made from scratch, which means you may have someone who has been here since 4 am for the bakers, 6 am for the staff. They may be tired as they don’t just come at 8am to empty a fridge or worst : a freezer. Again, that tarte Tatin you are not going to find everywhere, and it is so well made. My family is from Normandy, and the apples he chose are perfectly acid enough to balance the sugar. A marvel. The whipped heavy cream on the top...
Read moreWorst service ever! One of us bought a coffee and a pastry to go, while three others sat at the table outside. When the lady at the counter saw our friend joining us, she started making signs that you could only translate as NO and LEAVE. I am lucky to speak French, so I went inside to ask what was the problem, and it appears that the reason is very simple: when you consume on spot, they charge you more, so she did not want our friend to stay because if that! I understand this is your business strategy (which is ridiculous, but well... It's your own poor choice), but how dare you treat your customers this way? Two actual locals who witnessed the situation stopped by our table later to say they were appalled by the staff's attitude and that the place was actually totally fake. Vous devriez vraiment revoir votre approche client, sinon vous n'en aurez...
