Overall a fantastic experience! Couldn't find anywhere decent to eat at the top of Montmartre so decided to come here, a little bit away from the top. The staff were super friendly and efficient from the outset.
For a starter I had the french onion soup which was PERFECT, served with croutons and grated cheese. It's nice that the bread wasn't already inside the soup as while this is traditional, it's not my preference.
For a main, both my friend and I had the beef tartare with chips. The tartare itself was good, and I liked the sliced cornichons added to the mixture. However, it also had a slightly sweet/sour vinegar flavour that I didn't really like. The salad served with this course was lovely. The chips were great too, and were cut in a special way which elevated them. However, the sauces that were provided to us were just Worcester sauce and Tabasco which I thought were quite random choices. I would have liked some mayo or maybe something more elevated like the option to have bearnaise sauce.
Overall this was a really nice restaurant and a nice experience, and although the food wasn't entirely to my personal preference, I would...
Read moreThe cafe is located some blocks away from the Sacré-Cœur on a quiet residential street. We stopped at the cafe for early lunch expecting service to be quicker since there were very few customers at the time. We had to wait close to 40mins to get our meals, which would have been fine if we were informed ahead of time. We ordered a petite dejeuner that came with a choice of hot beverage (tea or coffee), freshly squeezed orange juice and a choice of bake (croissant or toast) and a plate of pork with a side of sauté potatoes, small salad and baguette cuts. The croissant was deflated but buttery and crispy. The coffee with milk and orange juice were good. The long awaited arrived in a very greasy plate and both the sauté potatoes and meat were dripping in grease. The meat was cooked very well, tender and juicy on the inside. It was prepared with little marination of smoked paprika which seems to be much loved around here. I have rated the cafe 3 out of 5 since the wait seemed unnecessary and draining. Staff were polite and friendly and there are plenty of tables available outside to enjoy the...
Read moreWas in France as an American tourist, so I was concerned about accessibility with some of the French cafes. My concerns were immediately assuaged by an extremely friendly waiter who both spoke very good English and who clarified what dishes provided the most authentic French flavors.
My fiancee and I split the French onion soup, my fiancee had the tartare, and I had the Tolouse Andouille. It was 40-something euros altogether, which I found to be extremely reasonable for Paris. All meals were simply fantastic, the cafe space was lovely (typical streetfront cafe layout in the Sacre-Cœur neighborhood, although no view of it), and it was the perfect thing we needed after the long hike up to see the Basilica. I recommend Au Relais to all, but for tourists looking for an English-friendly cafe, this was the friendliest - an added bonus. I was completely satisfied, and it was...
