They did not tell us when we booked that there is a cover charge and/or minimum spend. They kept insisting on €12 euro cover charge, which is fine (even though we were never told till the end) but the problem came when we spent more than 50€ per head and they kept insisting to pay €12 on top of that. We ordered many bottles of wine and food as per our requirement and they insisted since we each didn't order a starter + main, that we need to pay a cover charge on top of our bill. Which in principle they should have mentioned when we booked. When we called to book, we had a chat with the manager, but they did NOt mention about a pre fixe price. So by their logic if we each paid our cover charge of 12€, the bill would have been less than 50€ for 4 of us. But we paid more than 200€. We had no issue paying for what we ordered but could not understand the logic of charging us on top of our bill. Honestly, another 12€ per head when paying 50€ per head is not going to break the bank, but in principle it's simply dishonest, especially when we had 1. Booked online (no mention on how pricing works) 2. Called to inquire (no mention on how pricing works) 3. First ones there (no mention on how pricing works). There were 3 opportunities for the establishment to clearly state their payment policies, but they didn't.
Honestly we went for the famed parisien jazz atmosphere but having lived in New York , Chicago, St. Louis and traveling across the globe, would not classify this bar as 'jazz'. The name of the club says 'jazz' but it was more 'live music/piano' than jazz. We also booked for 7.30 since we had a child, but there was no music till 8.45. This was also not mentioned when we called to book. We would have given a better review if not for the attitude of the staff who were hell bent on over charging us for what one would classify as a regular piano bar. We've had lovely 2 weeks in france and the place had decent food and ambience but this place had an attitude that defines 'tourist trap'. They also guilted us about their commission going towards 'the fork' , but being in the restaurant business myself, the establishment should not be tying up with a 3rd party vendor if they can't afford it. Also when booking online , there was no mention of music timing, minimum spend etc. All in all, quite a disappointing experience for us and the establishment as nothing was clear. Wish restaurant owners would take more ownership to be more transparent about their charges and offerings so it doesn't leave a bitter taste for all.
Also at more than 50€ per head would have preferred a stellar JAZZ music performance or if we had known we were forced to eat a large meal, then we would opted for another gourmet restaurant of our choice. Who goes to a jazz 'club' thinking we would be pressured to eat a multiple course pricey dinner. Jazz clubs world over have been a place u could even order a whiskey/wine and enjoy the music rather than having a meal forced...
Read more5 stars for singer Leslie Lewis with pianist and bassist accompaniment, but have to minus 3 stars for the rude hat wearing host (older blond woman). When we arrived last night we were told by the host to choose a table ourselves and when we looked a little confused she shouted out to an older waiter (in glasses) to help us, whom by the way was so lovely and welcoming. The host brought 2 of our starters and asked if we were sharing, and my husband said, “no” (because we were a table of 3 people). Instead of asking who ordered which starter, she simply placed the 2 starters for 2 people and said, “you can choose choose which is your starter”. We ended up moving the plates around because no one got their correct starter. She stood by our table for a couple of seconds longer and watched us move the starters around the table. Are you serious? First we were requested to “find our own table” and now, “find our own starter”??? She appeared overly attentive - over the top gushing and swooning over some of the other diners but for some reason or rather she treated us very poorly. Her service was one step away from a self-service buffet. Absolutely no class at all. I don’t know want to guess what preconceptions she made when she saw us - whatever it was, I have no issues telling her what I think of her deplorable service and overall distasteful demeanor if she has the guts to respond. Is it unreasonable for us to expect a certain level of hosting and serving etiquette in an established restaurant? To make my night even worse, the back part of the restaurant (where we were) was stinking hot and stuffy. My husband and I took turns going out of the restaurant to cool down. People were also constantly bumping into my chair the entire night - I really could not get any more closer to my table. We travel extensively - Paris being one of my favorite places to visit, unfortunately Chez Papa Jazz is not...
Read moreChez Papa Jazz Club offers a wonderful atmosphere, with an intimate setting and outstanding live music that truly enhances the experience. The service was impeccable, and the staff stood out as the highlight of the evening - attentive, friendly, and professional.
However, the food was disappointing, especially considering the prices. We ordered several starters and three main dishes, but the portions were extremely small - more suited for children than a proper meal. The flavors were underwhelming, and we found ourselves relying on the provided salt to add some taste. Given the high prices, the value simply wasn’t there.
Additionally, there were unexpected charges. Despite the already steep pricing, we were also charged an entry fee, which was not communicated in advance. Another inconvenience is that the restaurant currently does not accept credit cards, so bringing cash is necessary.
Overall, Chez Papa Jazz Club is worth visiting for the music and atmosphere, but not for the dining experience. If you plan to go, be aware that a food order is required to stay, and be prepared for the costs. While it was an interesting experience, I...
