🌹Our Favorite French Bistro in Paris🌹
If you're in search of an authentic French bistro experience, look no further than Il était une oie dans le sud ouest. This charming spot is renowned for its exceptional duck confit and blood sausage, both of which are prepared to perfection. The flavors are rich and satisfying, making it a must-try for any gourmet enthusiast.
During our visit, we were absolutely delighted by the lamb stew, which tasted just like something out of grandmother's kitchen—it's simply divine. Each bite is a warm embrace of home-cooked goodness, showcasing the skill and passion of the kitchen team.
Interestingly, on our first visit, we noticed that nearly all the diners were speaking Mandarin. This unique atmosphere added to our experience, and we were pleased to see that the restaurant employs a lovely Mandarin-speaking server who made us feel right at home.
Initially, we had some reservations about visiting due to reviews regarding the owner's attitude towards customers. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The owner turned out to be quite friendly and engaging, even taking the time to serve us cognac himself—a gesture that made us feel valued.
If you're looking for high-quality, classic French bistro fare in Paris, Il était une oie dans le sud ouest is the place to be. Don’t miss out on...
Read moreThe carpacio was great, the confit good, and the wine recommendation great.
Unfortunately, the service was not... quite surprising given the reviews... and I've been to at least 50 restaurants in France over the years.
First, I was asked if I wanted sparkling water after I'd clearly asked for "un carafe d'eau," (and the English speaking customers next to me were offered "still or sparkling water" as the only options and naturally a brand name bottle of water showed up at their table for the "still water."). Second, I was honestly interrupted 4-5 times during my meal, something I usually enjoy the lack of in French restaurants- 3 times how the meal was going, 2 times if I was finished, if i wanted coffee or dessert, and once if I wanted the bill. Third, the bartender was clearly sick and coughing constantly - who shows up to work like that? And fourth, when I did ask for the bill, I received a QR code, which I ignored (i may be wrong but ive heard there is an extra fee?) and went to the front for the machine, which then showed an astonishing 99 euros instead of the 45 that was on my paper bill. Unbelievable.
TLDR: avoid if...
Read moreAs the name says "one upon a goose in the south west" it's a restaurant that focuses on South West French cooking. Their speciality is foie gras and a special dessert made from brioche. I would come here just for those two things alone :-)
I was invited here by a customer and they were very accommodating when we arrived. It also helps when you have a Parisian with you :-) the menu is in a board and they have a small selection of starters and mains. We shared a foie gras tasting menu accompanied by a fantastic Margaux wine. First time I have had red wine with foie gras. My main was a rack of lamb and it was also cooked to perfection.
The Babaarmagnac for dessert was a thick slice of self made brioche with an Armagnac syrup and Armagnac poured through it at the table. It was heavenly and if you like Armagnac you will love this dessert :-)
Excellent service and friendly atmosphere with outdoor seating made this a perfect evening. They even have a valet parking guy, a rarity in Paris, if you happen to drive here. Well worth a detour for amazing south west French cooking. Be prepared for the...
