I had the pleasure of dining at La Gauloise Paris restaurant today, and it was an exquisite culinary experience from start to finish. Ugh, what a dump.

I was looking for places to have Coq Au Vin and this was suggested in some random list on reddit. Boy, was it a mistake to go here.

Service : First I want to echo the various other reviews complaining about their rude staff. The owner/manager seemed nice enough when greeting as I entered. But guess wait staff should learn some manners. The head waiter (bald dude) had an air of self importance and seemed unnecessarily rushed about everything. I asked him and another wait staff for attention during the course of my meal for a wine refill (because wine was the only thing making this entire meal edible). I was told to wait as they were running around god knows doing what and never got back to me. Restaurant didn’t seem understaffed to me. Anyway, I’d had enough and I asked for the check only for one of them to bring me a menu again. Well, maybe that would helped half an hour ago ? So I politely decline and ask for the check again only for the bald guy to swoop in and grab the menu from my hands and indicating to the other guy : ‘he’s done’. I can assure, having visited other Parisian restaurants, this is not normal behavior even in Paris.

Food : The onion soup was the worst I’ve ever had. The bread they used seemed to have gone sour. Coq Au Vin was worse - I don’t think they did the wine reduction right and the entire dish had a taste of afterburn to it. Wine selection by the glass was limited but the one I had was quite good - at least they know not to serve a stale bottle.

All in all, I’m not sure what their deal is ? But if they fired the bald guy, their reviews would improve...

We were excited to dine here, but unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired. The moment we sat down, we were asked for our drink order before we even had a chance to look at the menu—literally within seconds of being seated. This was followed by a rude waiter taking our food order, and throughout the meal, we couldn't help but notice the stark difference in how we were treated compared to other tables.

Despite not being the only Americans in the restaurant, we were the only ones who received no interaction or explanation of the specials. We overheard a nearby table being offered the special of the day—skate—which I definitely would have ordered had I known about it.

During the meal, the staff repeatedly tried to take our drinks away while they were still half full, which felt rushed and intrusive. For dessert, I ordered the Crêpe Suzette, which is meant to be flambéed tableside. While it was prepared tableside, it was done at another table, not ours, and then simply brought over to us without any explanation or presentation.

To top it off, we were never offered coffee or any other post-dinner options. When it came time to pay, the waiter stood over us with his hand out, practically snatching the pen from us as we signed the receipt. To make things worse, the prix fixe menu offered a starter, entrée, and dessert at a set price, but we were overcharged and had to flag it down ourselves—something that should not happen in a restaurant of this caliber.

The food itself was delicious, but the inattentive and, at times, dismissive service left a sour taste. Sadly, it’s not a place...
