We were visiting the Musee Carnavalet and wanted to try a local restaurant when we found Le Coupe Gorge ("the Cut Throat"). It is a small restaurant - two floors with maybe 7-8 tables upstairs and a few on the ground level. Don't be put off by the very small frontage on the street, the restaurant goes well back and has a reasonable amount of seating.
We beat most of the lunch rush and were shown to the best table - on the window on the second floor (le premiere etage). After COVID and with all the concern about flu, it was nice to dine in a small restaurant where the tables were well spaced and we didn't feel crowded by the other diners, even after the restaurant filled (within 30 minutes after we arrived).
The specials are presented on a chalkboard, with prix fixe lunch options at 18-26 Euros and prix fixe dinners from 22-35 Euros. We both started with a Kir Royale (how else to start a mean in France?). We weren't very hungry, so we went right for the mains - I had the cote de boeuf (one of that day's specials), and my wife had a chicken special. The beef was very well flavored, but not quite the highest quality (e.g., not U.S. Prime). The taste was delicious, but a little chewy. My wife said the chicken was excellent and she finished every bit. The cooked vegetables accompanying were done perfectly and very tasty. The small fried potato wedges were especially delicious. The portions are generous, the prices were quite reasonable, and the service was outstanding.
Highly recommended - great little find on a...
Read moreThe waiter was somewhat short with me, but I wasn't bothered too much by it at first. I ordered the oxtail as a starter, but I didn't taste any caramel. I'm not sure if I misunderstood the menu, but nothing about it tasted remotely like caramel.
For the main course, I ordered the duck with orange. The waiter brought me something completely different. When I spoke to the waiter about it, they took the plate away and brought me a menu to argue about it. They claimed I had pointed to the item above the orange duck, but agreed I'd asked for orange. Nothing else on the menu said orange, they heard and agreed I had said orange, but it must be meaningless because my finger was a bit too high from their perspective.
I shortly after received the same plate, but with duck on it and a slice of orange on top. There was no sauce on the duck, the duck only barely had a hint of orange, and it was chewy.
Did not enjoy the experience. Can not recommend.
Edit: They also charge you $5 for the water they bring...
Read moreLe Coup Gorge, The Cut Throat, was the highlight of our restaurant experience in Paris. My husband and I did the 6 course tasting menu and every part was delicious! The chef himself brought each course and was exceptionally welcoming. I can’t say enough about both the food and service. My personal favorites were the shrimp bisque and the beef tongue. For the amount and quality of the food, 75 euro is an absolute steal. The wine was also superb and a great price. Would recommend trying the French wine of the moment. We will definitely be back next time we’re in Paris! For those wondering logistically, the restaurant is an easy walk from Hotel de Ville metro, as well as the Ile de Cite. If you’re in the mood for pre or post dinner drinks, there are several bars...
