Goldener Schwan — Restaurant in Aachen

The most amazing traditional German food I've ever had after many months in Germany! The sauerbraten (mit beef / Rind) was out of this world, so tender and delicious. My husband had the pork schnitzel and it was also delicious. And we started with the Schwäbische Maultaschen. Our German friends just taught us about this dish... Here's what they said:

Maultaschen have a nickname in the Swabian dialect: "Herrgottsbescheißerle," which translates to "Little God-cheaters". The legend says that Cistercian monks from the Maulbronn Monastery wanted to eat meat during the Lenten fast, which was forbidden. To hide the meat from God, they finely chopped it, mixed it with spinach and concealed it inside the pasta dough. And this became such a tradition that they are still enjoyed today by everyone.

The service was very friendly and accepting of our limited German, happily switching to English for us. It should never be expected to have English spoken in any foreign country, but it was greatly appreciated. Thank you for a wonderful meal...

Stopped off in Aachen on our way to the Rhineland. Found this place and happy we did. Food is typical German. Good quality and very reasonable price. Had the ribs, delicious. Sat outside, great weather, atmosphere. Highly recommended. All languages spoken Revisited on 26/7.....sadly not as good. My son ordered the herring. He couldn't eat it. Totally saturated in salad sauce. We told the waiter and he asked if we'd like to order something else which we did. When I asked for the bill he came and said €81. Didn't show me any bill !!!was I charged for the herring? I stupidly paid without asking. Sorry but your staff should first give a bill, walk away allow the customer some time to inspect then return for the payment. Very...

I visited the Goldener Schwan with my extended family this week. So, four adults and two children. We wanted to sit inside, so there was no problem finding a table; no need for a reservation, and there was no wait. My family all had traditional German fare - all of which I would highly recommend based on the comments of my family. This included haxe, sauerbraten, and schnitzels for the kids. I'm vegan, and then chef was able to make me a vegan salad (even though it's not on the menu!). The waiting staff were very polite, happy to give recommendations, and happy to help me with my vegan order.
