The cafe looks fancy and historic, despite that it's "only" open since 1999, not the early 1900 as you may think when you first enter the place. It's a good example of clever marketing. However, a city like Berlin has many cafes to choose from. Some of them are selling normal coffee and some speciality coffee like this one (and also charging you for it). The first time I came here I payed too much attention to the cafe and to little to my coffee. Unfortunately, the coffee quality here is not good at all. In fact it is one of the worst speciality roasters in town and here is why:
They have a wide variety of coffee for sale and therefore your chances of buying stale coffee is pretty high. (It's easy to tell, freshly roasted coffee creates a lot of "foam" when it comes into contact with hot water...besides the taste of cause)
Every single coffee is roasted to a point where it is hard to taste anything but the roast. Yes, the coffees still retain some characteristics but compared to any other speciality roaster in the city it can be considered inferior.
While most roasters are very passionate about their coffee and will focus on your experience at their place, this one is a business which tries to sell you whatever they have while simultaneously telling you it's excellent quality (and the quality is really bad).
If you are looking for good coffee in Berlin go elsewhere. There are cafes like "The Visit" or "five elephant" which have an excellent coffee for a...
Read moreI've been visiting Berlin Kaffeerösterei for the past 11 years, which speaks a lot. As an expat living just around the corner, it has always held a special place in my heart. I used to love the old-fashioned charm of this cafe. Now, I genuinely miss the old staff team and the times when one could even look through the backdoor of the shop and see the bakers at work, proudly showing their true craftsmanship. Over the past few years, I’ve tried to return occasionally, hoping to relive that feeling, but my visits have increasingly left me disappointed. During my last visit on a Sunday, I ordered a Sacher cake, which I considered a staple of the café. Unfortunately, the cake was dry and tasted more like sugar than chocolate. While the Nitro Coffee was a nice seasonal addition, it couldn’t make up for the overall decline in quality and experience. Right now, the café gives more of a touristy feeling, which is understandable given its location. Nonetheless, the quality has truly declined, and the prices no longer reflect the worthiness of their offerings. I hope Berliner Kaffeerösterei can bring back some of the charm, care, and craftsmanship that made it special for long-time...
Read moreEasily my favorite place in the whole city to grab some delicious coffee and cake on a relaxed rainy Sunday in the afternoon
I never booked in advance, yet with some wait I always managed to find a seat inside eventually. They have a wide variety of delicious cake, some classics like new York cheesecake and carrot cake but also some of their own signature recipes. I tried most of them already, they have a fluffy texture and are very moist on the inside. Also the chocolate tart with walnuts and hazelnut is one of the best I ever tried, completely recommend
What they excel at is the coffee. They have a whole menu just for that. Here you can find award winning coffee from all around the world, one of my favorites are from Kenya and Colombia
The waiters are also very friendly, knowledgeable and will explain to you the coffee menu and the different ways it can be served and trust you are going to have some questions. Give it a try and you...
