Looking for a place for family Sunday brunch, on an overcast Sunday, we chose Distrikt Coffee in Mitte for their pouched eggs and naturally, a fix of good coffee. On arrival, we had to cue to get a table. The announced 20 minute wait though, seemed quite shorter and we were led to a table which also had sufficient space for the pram of our 1 year old daughter. After the wait, our expectations were high.
The staff was friendly and accommodating throughout. The menu is rather lean and seems to cater a lot for the Vs of the patronage.
We ordered the Avocado on sour dough bread with sunflower seeds and two poached eggs and a serving of the French toast with blueberry, caramelised walnuts, maple syrup and créme fraiche for the ladies, Cappuccino, iced latte and a plain coffee (filter)
The avocado poached eggs combo was served out reasonably well, and having a salad other than the usual ruccola was pleasing to the eye and the mouth. The poached eggs however, whilst looking near perfect when served, turned out to be uneven cooked. Admittedly, it is an art as well as a skill to perfectly poach eggs. But once decided to put them on the menu, one should aim for that artistic perfection - consistently. Half the yolk was solid, whilst the egg white the other side was still runny. A matter of timing and movement I'd dare say. The "green Goddess" dressing was rather subtle, too subtle to be tasted or seen.
The french toast was served with two rather thick, no, i should say fat slices. Buried under a generous serving of blueberry confit and a even more generous dollop of créme fraiche, the combination if the two working rather well and the maple syrup coming through it all too. Whilst overall enjoyable, nit something to come back for specifically.
The cappuccino was middle of the road, the iced latte nothing special either, both sure nothing to mention at home and the filter coffee, for my taste too weak and lacking a proper base or developing flavour. Then again, i am an Arabica Coffee man.
The service was good throughout and the fast accommodation of us with toddler was very much appreciated. But our expectations not met...
Read more4.4* is about right for this über cöol café. It's a vibe as calming as camomile and as earthy as dirty chai. So, that's a great start. The service is puppy friendly and berlin confident, so that works too. The coffee is well made, but a little thin and bitter. I didn't get to examine the beans. I'll head back for an espresso to get micro. The toast was lovely, and if the abundant chervil had tasted like chervil, we'd be talking 5* with all kinds of bullets. Not their fault. Even having chervil is exciting in this stättle. The broccoli was seared, not charred? Small point, big difference in the flavour stakes. The avocado was good, which a local tells me is as rare as chervil. Fennel fronds aren't as pretty, but perhaps make the twist they're aiming for. The dressings could be more positive too. Overall though, it's a pleasant enough item...if pleasant enough is what you're up for. The pumpkin spice cake follows suit. A well thought theough and constructed surprisingly light frosting sits on top of a somewhat spiced cake that needs to be more about the butter. And a little less time in the oven if it doesn't get a mid bake dose of spiced melted butter, then this would take it up a step or 4. These are solid prices, so I've judged finikitively. But it's a...
Read moreI agree about the breakfast sandwitch, it's okay but it feels a bit "missing something", it's a bit too deconstructed. I feel like the ingredients aren't really playing in harmony, when you eat it it's just deconstructed, kinda like a reconstructed deconstructed hotel breakfast (eggs are a bit like soggy hotel breakfast scrambed eggs (you can see the air bubbles and consistency in the photo), sausages are yeah hotel breakfast sausage, but sauce is good, but bread is dry). Also there's quite a bit of american cheese (3 slices), and it wasn't melted at all, felt a bit greasy plastiky, so I removed it. I think they tried to do smth a bit like brekkie, but the eggs are spongy and not creamy, and cheese isn't melted, bread is dry and not buttered not toasted, so idk. Very nice coffee and nice staff and nice place though. I would love to try the other dishes, I just don't recommend the breakfast samdwich for the...
