If you're anything like me, you can agree that food plays a huge role when it comes to traveling and fully embracing a new culture. However, sometimes certain limitations can get in the way of enjoying those experiences. In my case, it is the limitation of celiac disease.
I recently returned from a work trip in Berlin, one of the most beautiful and diverse cities in the world. Most would believe that finding a gluten free/celiac friendly restaurant in such a big city would not be an issue. However, you would be surprisingly wrong. As for every trip, I did my typical celiac friendly restaurant search in hopes of finding a meal to enjoy. And after a decent amount of time spent on google, I kept stumbling across Mamma Monti. The reviews seemed excellent and although hesitant and nervous, especially with Italian food, I figured I would give it a try.
To say my expectations were exceeded is an understatement. From the food to the service and atmosphere I returned to Mamma Monti not just once but four times throughout the span of my entire trip. Bringing friends and family, both gluten free and not. I spent many evenings talking to the owner, who himself has celiac disease enjoying delicious food, limoncello and even better company. After his diagnosis he made it his personal mission to create an entirely celiac/gluten free friendly, truly authentic Italian restaurant in the heart of Charlottenburg. And boy did he succeed.
I cannot remember the last time I went to a restaurant labeled "gluten and celiac friendly", ate bread as an appetizer and was not concerned in the slighted about being contaminated or getting sick. Every item on the menu can be made or modified to be celiac friendly. From separate stove tops, frying pans and plates, Mamma Monti makes it their personal mission for everyone to enjoy their food allergen and cross contamination free. I cannot wait to enjoy a safe, absolutely delicious meal surrounded by even better company when I return to Berlin. If there is any restaurant I can recommend when visiting Charlottenburg, celiac or not, it would be Mamma Monti. Absolutely...
Read moreVery pleasant dinner the other night at this simple Berlin Italian restaurant. Very friendly and attentive staff. We were a large group. They offer gluten free food, which was critical for one of my colleagues and he very much enjoyed his pasta as well as the gluten free bread they provided him for the antipasti. I had the grilled octopus, which was butter soft and the taglialini with porcini and truffles finished in a Parmesan wheel, which was incredibly rich. My only issue with the food was that the vegetables that came with the octopus were tasteless and overcooked, even by Italian standards, which prefer soft vegetables. I would have also preferred not to sit so close to the door. They had a back room they could have put us in. Overall nice experience but nothing...
Read moreYou see what you get when you taste what you see. If gluten-free food was the only way I could survive and this was the only gluten-free place on Earth I would rather die. I don’t know if Italian food is so overrated because of some kind of European superiority complex that people have, but what I do know is that in the city of Berlin in circa 2023 of our good lord one can get a meal twice as tasty for half the price. Per density capita this has to be one of the most underwhelmingly flavoured culinary experiences I’ve had for a 23 euros pasta.
The cheese the bread the wine the dough the oil and even the chilli were all cursed by a genuine lack of...
