Without doubt the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. The experience completely ruined what should have been a wonderful evening, celebrating my friend’s seventieth birthday. Our experience was so shocking, disturbing and awful , it has cast a shadow over our entire celebratory week in Berlin. This meal was meant to be the highlight. We arrived early for our booking. We explained this, apologised, and asked whether we might have our meal early, though our booking was for 18.00. The member of staff to whom I spoke said we had no booking, and that the restaurant was full. There was almost no one there, and a few tables with ‘reserved’ cards. Presumably, one of them was ours. The man to whom I spoke quickly became very aggressive. I had done no more than given my name and said we had a reservation. I then explained that we had booked online, and that the reservation had been confirmed. The man with whom I was speaking said that had nothing to do with him; that we had no reservation, and that the restaurant was full. Which clearly it was not. I then showed the man the emailed confirmation of the booking. He looked at it, and said it made no difference. My friend urged the increasingly aggressive member of staff to calm down. He told her her husband - referring to me; I am not her husband - ‘had a problem’. I then saw my name in the reservation book, and pointed it out to the man. The man fell silent, and then, in what seemed a deliberately surly manner, directed another member of staff to take us not to one of the reserved tables, in the cosier part of the restaurant, but to a much less welcoming side room, where there were no reserved tables. We were then asked by another member is staff whether we were ‘their tourist visitors’. The implication was clear. By now, the evening was ruined. The atmosphere was tense. We ordered the minimum and left as soon as we could. We had planned a long, leisurely evening, with good drinks and food, celebrating my friend’s seventieth birthday. We are both still upset and shocked by what happened. We said so little and were left utterly bewildered by this sudden, unprovoked, aggressive and unreasonable behaviour. Maybe the member of staff was just having a bad night. He gave us a terrible night and has ruined our stay in Berlin. The restaurant was warmly recommended by a German friend and colleague. I hope never again to experience anything like this. It was the shock of the sudden aggression that took us aback and that has left us feeling so upset. It had to be said, the food and drink were good, but we could not enjoy our meal after what had happened. Maybe our experience was unrepresentative; I can only sound a...

If you're into being ignored, this is your place.

My wife and I are on our honeymoon, enjoying Berlin and all its charm—until we sat down at Dicke Wirtin.

We were seated and then apparently entered a time warp where we became invisible. Fifteen minutes of nothing. No menu, no greeting, not even eye contact. We asked for menus, were told “yes”
and then, like magic: nothing again.

Eventually, a staff member arrived, carrying the warm hospitality of a tax audit. When I politely mentioned we still hadn’t received menus, he nodded and—shockingly—walked off, never to be seen again. Another five minutes passed, and we decided we’d rather spend our evening literally anywhere else.

We’re relaxed, low-maintenance people. But there’s a difference between laid-back service and just being completely disregarded. Dicke Wirtin, sadly, falls into the latter.

Maybe they’re too busy, maybe they don’t care, or maybe we just didn’t meet the required level of psychic ordering.

All jokes aside, i’m sick of places like this thinking they can treat paying customers however they like and still coast by on reputation or...
