The vibe at Rockcafé Halford is exactly what you'd expect from a Berlin institution: solid rock music, a fitting decor paying homage to legends, and a crowd that's a genuine mix of the rock scene with a Berlin twist. The Halford Hell was a decent house beer — nothing extraordinary, but it does the job for the theme. That said, it's clear the place has seen its best days. It still has charm, but it's no longer the powerhouse it probably once was. You can feel that the reputation now runs more on nostalgia than current energy. Service, however, was where things took a real downturn. Despite the bar not being particularly crowded and staff being present, service was painfully slow — even by Berlin’s relaxed standards. Several guests who arrived and ordered after me were served and attended to promptly, while I was left waiting far longer than anyone reasonably should. Even settling the bill became an exercise in persistence. While I understand that in local bar culture, regulars might get quicker service, it was clear that familiarity wasn't the only factor at play. Let’s just say that in a sea of diversity marked mostly by accents rather than appearances, some guests seemed to find it much easier to get noticed. Call it what you will, but it left a sour note on an otherwise lovely night.

Cracking pub. I've often found that rock pubs, miles out of the city centre, end up being a bit dark and dingy. Not this one. The owner has done a cracking job of the design. Pub is cosy, service is excellent, drinks a good price, and the place is very clean and welcoming. Also music at perfect volume. Can have a conversation and the bar staff can hear you! I can't fault the place one bit. Would definitely visit again.

My "happy place" in Berlin. I first came across Halford's in 2017, and ever since, this venue has had a special place in my heart. As the name and exterior of the venue suggest, this bar was built in reverent tribute to Metal God and lead vocalist of Judas Priest, Rob Halford. Priest memorabilia lines the walls and ceilings, and at least two corners feature custom-made icons of Halford, creating an atmosphere somewhere between a charming dive bar and a teenager's bedroom in 1986. If this is starting to sound like a soulless theme bar to you, cast all worries aside. The staff are composed of wonderfully friendly and charismatic heavy music enthusiasts of all stripes, reminiscent of a pirate ship's crew, helmed by Sven, the owner, whose resemblance to Rob Halford I can't imagine is coincidental. The draught beer is ice cold, the cocktails are all named after heavy metal bands, and there is even a small snack menu composed mostly of sausages and pickles with toast. Besides drinking and enjoying conversation with random headbangers from around the world, I find an enormous amount of enjoyment in watching one of the television screens mounted throughout the venue. These do not feature sports or news broadcasts, but a playlist of heavy metal music videos that never fail to either amp you up, make you laugh, or a bit of both. Whenever a Dio track comes on you can find me shedding a tear and raising a glass in his honour. I feel an almost childlike sense of joy whenever I sit down for a few drinks (I've so far been unable to have only one drink there).

If you like heavy metal music and culture, go there. If you don't, go...
