La Fonda — Restaurant in Cologne

Went there with a group of 9 and despite the food being good I was very disappointed with a few things. To start with the positive part, the food was great, even though the venison and frittata lacked some flavour, specifically salt. However, what really bothered me was the little attention and accomodating the staff showed us. One person from the group is gluten-intolerant, when asking about one of the dishes, he told her it was gluten-free, insisting barley doesn't have gluten which is incorrect. For somebody highly allergic this can turn out very dangerous and is very irresponsible from the waiter. We then had to wait 45 minutes for the starter and over 1 hour for the main dish. Additionally, it was nearly impossible to catch the attention of a waiter to order more bread/water. I sat with my back to the side door which was opened frequently while food was brought out to the hotel next door, leaving ice-cold air inside which was anything but comfortable during the evening. When it came to dessert, I was disappointed to see that from all of the amazing options the menu has to offer, for groups the choice was limited to ice-cream and creme brulee. When I asked about potentially ordering the pralines that were on the normal menu, I was told it would be difficult as we're a group. When I questioned this as the pralines should be ready anyways and don't require preparation, I was told he would ask in the kitchen. When he then came back to take the order, he didn't seem to have asked and just said, slightly upset by my request, that it's not possible. Unfortunately we had an extremely bad experience at La Fonda. We reserved a table in advance and specifically asked to have a table outside as we were with a toddler. Upon arrival the manager/host absolutely insisted to not sit us outside (although they were free tables). His attitude was extremely hostile and the absolute opposite of client oriented. Not only this, but his remarks were also shockingly smag and xenophobic as he told me (we spoke German and I am a foreigner) that: "in Deutschland machen wir solche Sachen anders". Das La Fonda ist leider weit hinter den Erwartungen geblieben. Es fing am Eingang an. Es wird einem weder die Garderobe abgenommen, noch wurde man zum Platz geführt. Der erste Keller (anscheinend noch in der Ausbildung - jeder. Fängt irgendwann mal an..) sowie der zweite Kellner, waren nicht in der Lage ein von uns bestelltes Getränk zu bringen. Ergo wollte man und mit einem Ersatz Getränk zufrieden stellen, dass fast genauso sein sollte, nur eben von einer anderen Marke. Statt dieses vorab schon einzuschenken, hätte man evtl. erstmal fragen können. So haben wir es dankend abgelehnt (da wir beide dieses Getränk kennen und eben genau jenes haben wollten). Wir sind dann umgeschwenkt. Der angepriesene Aperitif war so süß, dass selbst die meisten Gäste um uns herum teils bis nach dem Hauptgang daran herumgeschlürft haben.

Generell freundliches Personal, das Essen war ok, aber leider mehr auch nicht. Es hat bei mir schon Seltenheitswert, dass ich etwas auf dem Teller liegen lasse. Ich hatte das Dry Aged Steak bestellt. Das Steak selbst war ok aber alles andere als überragend, abgesehen davon dass es für meinen Geschmack etwas zu klein war… Naja. Leider waren die Pommes so versalzen, dass sie nicht genießbar waren. Der Beilagensalat war wohl noch das Beste am ganzen Gericht. Meine Begleitung hatte sich für Fisch entscheiden. Der Fisch selbst war auf den Punkt. Allerdings war auch hier die Soße und das Gemüse drumherum so versalzen, dass es alle anderen Geschmäcker überdeckte. Schade. Auf Nachfrage des Kellners ob alles gut gewesen sein - erwiderte sie, dass es sehr salzig war. Anscheinend nicht das erste mal, dass er sowas hörte. Er sagte direkt „ja das ist immer sehr salzig, bis hart an der Grenze“.

Den Nachtisch sparten wir uns, da die Geräuschkulisse nicht zum unterhalten einlädt.
