This is a great restaurant with a very good location and excellent food. The atmosphere is typical for a hearty restaurant and overall it was great.

The food

The food at Block House is always top-notch. The steaks are cooked to perfection and the sides are delicious. I especially recommend the baked potato with sour cream and chives.

The service at Block House is friendly and efficient. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure that we had everything we needed.

The atmosphere

The atmosphere at Block House is warm and inviting. The restaurant is decorated in a traditional German style and the staff are all very friendly.

The location of Block House Jungfernstieg is excellent. It is right in the heart of Hamburg, close to all the major tourist attractions.

It's a shame to be writing this review, because it doesn't do justice to the quality of the food, which was excellent. The steak was one of the best I've had, and serving a salad beforehand works surprisingly well as a starter.

What was disappointing and at times infuriating was the service. Alongside our steaks, and a bottle of wine, we ordered some glasses of tap water, and were surprised to see a bottle of expensive-looking mineral water turn up. When we asked about this, we were told "oh, we don't do tap water".

Refusing to serve tap water, to guests who are paying upwards of €20 for a main and ordering wine too, is mean (in some countries it's even illegal). Bringing mineral water instead, without asking, and charging for it, is borderline fraudulent.

We had a similar experience with the sides. We were asked "would you like mushrooms with your steak?", the implication being that this would be a few mushrooms on the side. It turned out that these were a (substantial) side dish, which was of course separately chargeable.

I wish I could rate this place more highly, on food alone it would be a solid 4 or 5 stars, but in a restaurant in this price range, nickel-and-diming your...

Block House is a Hamburg-based restaurant franchise that specialized on steaks and was formed in 1968. On September 26, 1968, the first Block House opened its doors.

I adore everything. The service is excellent, and the entire staff is quite kind. We Indians prefer to consume completely cooked food. I was a little concerned about Meat before attending, but I figured, why not give it a shot? While taking my order, she asked whether I wanted English or German, and I responded English because I am new here. She then asked if I wanted completely cooked beef or pinkish, and I said fully cooked because I was so comfortable. The beef was delicious and well cooked, and the baked potatoes were delicious.

The entrance to the restaurant is spectacular. I rarely write such lengthy evaluations, but this location is worth it. The service was excellent. When I want to eat steak, there is no better place than this one. This restaurant is one of my favorites on the list. I enjoy eating at this restaurant. When it comes to the price, I believe it is a little high.

If you want a good steak, I highly recommend this dining establishment.
