BLOCKBRÄU — Restaurant in Hamburg

Before starting this review, i'd like to highlight that the Blockbräu doesnt necesserily do anything wrong. They just arent the best at what they do. The Blockbräu primarily profits from its location dead-center in the harbor and from the huge influx of tourists there. It is very popular and so crowded on saturday evenings that you wont find a table if you dont book in advance. the kitchen is working fulltime, the tables are all packed and the lovley waiting staff is doing its best among the chaos.

However, the Blockbräu suffers from the fact that there are better options at cheaper prices with better quality all over town.

The food at the Blockbräu is okay, but for the prices i'd expect more than "okay". The meatdishes and steaks are sometimes exacly the same as at their parent company "Block House" just with worse sidedishes. If you crave a steak, go to Block House instead.

The fishdishes are very small and unimaginativ, if you crave good fish: go to "Heimathafen" or "Daniel Wischer" instead.

If you crave traditional bavarian food like a Schweinshaxe or some good Pretzels, the Hofbräuhaus (Esplanade or Speersort) will have you covered.

If you're there for the beer. Dont. When i visited they had 3 beers (beyond Radler and alcohol free) Pils, Wheat and one seasonal special The Hofbräuhaus has 7 in comparison. Go to one of Hamburgs craftbeer bars and you will find places with up to 10 different beers.

Ultimatly the Blockbräu has decent food, with the high quality you expect from other brands of Eugen Block, but lost somewhat of its appeal due to expanding the menu and having a very packed kitchen. if you are there for the roofgarden view or just want a place where you can get a wide variety of local foods, you might enjoy this. My Fishdish cost around 19€, together with 2 large beers i came to a price of around 30€ + tip.

However if you'd rather have a specialized restaurant that makes traditional food at cheaper rates, i'd skip this...

Excellent beer pub right on the water overlooking the river, in a very good location. It’s pretty famous. It’s in the old block house. We were there at midday and got a light appetizer, beer and coffee. The prices were very reasonable for the area, and for being in the most touristy spot in Hamburg. We got an appetizer, fish bites, which were large and tasty with bread, pickles and salad, etc. A half liter of their good pale ale “Helles “ beer was only €6.50, and coffee was €4. Portions for the lunch entrees looked huge! Our server was really great, although very, very busy. Obviously the place was packed, and they were seating people at long tables with others, which was fine. There is a beautiful view of the river as the ferry go by. This is a very pleasant place, and a good spot for a snack and good draft beer. I imagine it’s very crowded in the evenings. It’s three levels. Outside there are many, many shops, and it’s a major stop for all of the different hop on hop off bus routes. You can also buy a boat tour for €30 each. We went there on a busy night and they were able to seat us right away, even got a table on the first floor on the window so we had a beautiful view on the water. We got our delicious beer quite quickly, but had to wait a while to be able to order, although waitresses were walking past us a lot. We started to feel a bit ignored and also annoyed after the table next to us,who got seated about 15 min after we arrived got asked for their food order before us. And other tabels around us also got served. We had to wait another 10 min when someone finally approached us. The Service Team was altogether really nice and friendly and made alterations on the meals easy for us so we can overlook the fact that we had to wait longer than others.
