Gaststätte A'Varina — Restaurant in Hamburg

AVOID THIS PLACE!!! Be aware especialy if you are non-german speaking tourist, they will try to scam you! This was the worst experience I had in a restaurant in my whole life. We went there for a late dinner with my partner while on a holiday in Hamburg. We asked for an english menu. When we picked the main dish, they served us totaly different dishes (that were quite bland), without informing us in advance. When we asked about it, they told us that they don´t have the food we ordered anymore so they gave us this instead. Also my partner had one big beer and then asked for a small beer from another brand to try it, they brought him the same beer and again big instead of small. After that we asked for a check. They haven´t gave it to us for quite some time so we asked again but they still haven´t gave it to us. There was another group in the restaurant beside us and basicaly after this group left and we were the only people in the restaurant, 2 waiters and another bigger guy showed at our table. The guy started to scribble some amounts of money on the napkin on our table and agresively telling us that this is the price we have to pay, which was over 50 euros. But the prices were higher than on the menu. So we told them that the food and drinks we ordered were different prices than what he´s writting, to which he replied that the prices on the english menu and german menu are different and they are taking only prices from german menu into consideration and next time we should pick from the german menu. We felt threatened by the whole situation and didn´t know what to do, so we payed. But then they told us that they made a mistake a we should pay even more. After that we left. I never experienced such a horrible behaviour, I wouldn´t mind the money that much, but the way they treated us was something that nobody should experience in a restaurant or any other place. There are other similiar restaurants in the area, I would advise you to go to those and...

I feel sad about this review as my expectations were higher based on the environment inside the restaurant. However, the food was not great. The initial snacks was simply tinned sweet corn, a few shrimp and kidney beans thrown together in a dish with no care or seasoning. While it was complementary it really has no place on a dinning table, better just to serve olives... For mains our selection of steak, chicken and fish in clay pots looked good, Indeed the steak was tasty and tender, the sauce it was rendered in had a nice flavour but lacked seasoning and was not restaurant quality. The chicken was significantly overcooked yet the sauce significantly undercooked, having not been reduce properly and therefore bland. The fish dish while appetising to the eye suffered from a similar fate, the meat once again over cooked and just a texture, this time the sauce was flavoured with a fish stock that tasted cheap and overpowered the dish making it unpleasant. This is disappointing as stews are easy to prepare for a dinner service, there really is no excuse for the chef here. The end price was 50 euro for the food (3 dishes) which is not expensive but at this price it is fair to expect better quality. The salad and fried potatoes were also cheaply done and under sized. The worst restaurant experience I have had so far. We ordered shrimps in garlic sauce and rabbit meat. The shrimps were edible, although of quality below what you would normally expect in a restaurant. However, the rabbit was really hard to chew and it had hardly any taste at all. The potatoes and the salad that came with it, were also of very poor quality. I only tasted it, but realized I wouldn't enjoy the food at all. I felt really uncomfortable about it and I didn't want to offend the staff, but there was no other way out, so I apologized and asked it to be returned. As a response, the waiter took the food away and brought the bill with the rabbit included. When I pointed out that I didn't really eat it, I was told that the rabbit was fine and it was my problem that I didn't like it. Not feeling like making a scene, I only mentioned that it's not the treatment one can expect in a good restaurant, payed for the food I didn't eat and left the place. It seems that most people have better experience, so maybe it was a bad day or something, but still, many thanks for ruining...
