A Must-Visit for Soulful Japanese Cuisine in Heidelberg
Kadokko is a must-visit for anyone craving soulful, heartfelt Japanese cuisine. It’s a place where sincerity in cooking meets culinary artistry—every dish prepared with heart, seasonality, and integrity.
Among all the mocha lattes we’ve tried—from Munich to Florence to Hamburg—Kadokko’s stands out as the absolute best. But this charming spot offers much more than just outstanding drinks. It’s a beloved local favorite, especially among Heidelberg’s Japanese community, known for its truly authentic, homemade Japanese food.
The interior blends timeless Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics in a minimalistic, calming space. Even with around 40 guests during our visit, the atmosphere remained spacious and relaxed—perfect for a comfortable dining experience.
Kadokko’s menu changes monthly and is thoughtfully crafted based on seasonal fruits and vegetables. We were especially impressed by their sustainable philosophy: sourcing ingredients from local farmers. Their commitment to quality and seasonality is evident in every dish.
Embracing the Japanese tapas-style concept, we sampled several plates: crispy lotus roots, warm and cold tofu, tender chicken karaage, flavorful pork tonkatsu, and handmade gyoza (both pork and vegan—equally delicious). The okonomiyaki and other dishes were just as impressive—rich in flavor and beautifully prepared.
As matcha lovers, we couldn’t resist the desserts. Both the Matcha Crème Caramel and Matcha Gateau au Chocolat were outstanding—moist, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with fresh matcha notes.
Highly recommended for anyone seeking authentic Japanese food crafted with care and deep respect for ingredients...

Unlike the common approach of drowning every dish in heavy sauces, here the ingredients themselves take center stage. The oil used for frying is always fresh, never the cheap palm oil you find elsewhere—you can tell right away from both the color and the taste.
The kitchen is spotless, almost surgical in its precision, with every item meticulously arranged. A graceful lady—perhaps the head chef—moves with the elegance of a character straight out of a Japanese drama.
The menu changes with the seasons and is consistently inventive. Seasoning is handled with remarkable precision: salt, sugar, and soy sauce are balanced just right, never overpowering, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine through. True cuisine, after all, is not about showcasing the sauce, but about elevating the essence of the food itself.
As for the price—I gladly pay for this level of quality and craftsmanship. If you find it expensive, the problem may not lie with the restaurant, but with your own understanding of what good...

Truly delicious food! The portions are rather small and the price is rather high. However: the taste is just amazing! It’s totally worth it! Nowadays, there are so many „fusion food“ Asian restaurants out there. But if you want to have authentic (!) Japanese food that has not (!) been adapted/changed to the European/Western palate, then this is the place to go!! This restaurant reminds me of the food I had in Japan… a lovely restaurant!
