Giantes could be a standout in its neighborhood—a place once known for its good dining scene. Now, though, it's lost some of its shine.
The place has its own unique character, especially the outdoor area, though it loses much of its charm with all those tables crammed together.
Here's the real kicker: the food. The only dish that hit the mark was the Kasiotika dolmadakia, a seasonal specialty made by a women's cooperative. That's it. If that's the highlight, the kitchen seriously needs to step up. This spot was one of the first to offer a decent meal in the area, but now, surrounded by a sea of mediocre eateries and swarms of tourists and locals alike, it seems they're coasting on past success without much effort.
The service is another letdown. It's functional but lacks warmth, matching the indifferent attitude of the manager on duty. Sure, some of the staff show genuine politeness, but it's not enough to make up for the overall lackluster experience.
Giantes sits in an area that's crying out for quality, and it has all the ingredients to shine—if only it cared enough to try. Right now, it's an unremarkable choice when it could be...
Read moreI have dined at the finest restaurants which the world has to offer, from the most sacred sushi halls of Japan to the most respected whale huts of Scandinavia.
I can say without hesitation that this venue has a menu which is unrivalled by all, save the banquet tables of Valhalla and the tables of Olympus.
I could not more highly recommend the moussaka, it was so delectable that I had no choice but to painstakingly set a portion aside to smuggle back to my home and native land such that I may hopefully relive the bliss of which this dish permitted me a brief glimpse.
As high as my praise may be for the cuisine and scrumptious treats offered by this divine venue, I must sing equal praises for my server Maria. She acted as a benevolent and wise steward, guding me through the menu choices to arrive at a location which can be compared only to that of achieving enlightenment as described in the teachings of the Buddha.
Should you ever find yourself in the city of Athens, do not do yourself the sacrilegous disservice of missing this foodhall, and be sure to enquire as to the whereabouts of the...
Read more“Giantes” is one of the most understated restaurants in Athens. Although is located at Exarchia (a neighborhood famous for its riots) it is quite safe to go and visit even late at night. It is favored by the locals and it is almost always packed so call ahead for a reservation. I will skip the descriptions about the place which is lovely and cozy indeed and just talk about the main course. Food (and service) is king here, I have tried a variety of dishes and desserts and I can honestly say that there isn't one dish that I didn't like. In reality I loved almost everything, and couldn't wait to try one more thing. The food is so good and scrumptious and you will become a regular, especially considering the fair prices (for the quality and quantity) and the ever polite and smiling staff. There is nothing pretentious, just great food with the freshest ingredients and friendly people. If I lived in Athens that would be my number one choice. Highly...
