We found Koukouvagia through its glowing Google Reviews while searching for a place serving traditional Cretan food—and it absolutely delivered.
Travelling through Heraklion on our two-week Greek holiday, we turned up hungry: my wife, our two teenage daughters, and me. What followed was one of those quietly brilliant meals you hope for on holiday—local, generous, and honest.
The horiatiki salata came out first, and it set the tone: a traditional Greek salad made memorable with chunks of paximadi (Cretan rusk bread) that soaked up the olive oil and tomato juices like they were made for each other. Then came the dolmades, warm and delicately wrapped, served with a lemony sauce that added just the right tang.
Next, the loukaniko—Cretan veal sausage—smoky and full of character, followed by Cretan-style tortellini filled with tender veal, clearly handmade with care. The shrimp with tarama (fish roe) was rich, silky, and probably the standout dish of the night. Finally, the pork bifteki landed—a burger in name, but far more than the word suggests. Well-seasoned, juicy, and satisfying.
The service? Relaxed but attentive. The setting? Unfussy but full of local charm. It felt like we’d stumbled onto a place the locals quietly know is good—and the tourists only find if they do their homework.
Koukouvagia doesn’t shout. It just serves excellent food with quiet confidence. A genuine little gem in Heraklion, and exactly what we hoped for when we went looking for real...
Read moreAs a traveller, I always love to indulge in the culture and food which led me to this wonderful place.
What worked?
Great customer service, attention to details, caring and unexpectedly, they surprised me with Raki drink (0.3L) and dessert. That was very thoughtful and they were very nice. The staff were also always ready to help and the wait time was very low for orders which is very good, considering the place was kind of busy. Also, food was very flavourful and taste couldn’t be better. The snail? Better than the ones I have had anywhere in Europe.
Importantly, the food is reasonably priced. It is not expensive for a tourist area.
What could be better?
The fries were soggy and cold, not sure why especially as order to deliver was about 15 minutes.
Not sure if they had pre-prepared the food but it didn’t taste fresh, even though it was very flavourful, and I didn’t need to season it, it could have been 5 star if the food didn’t taste that way.
I hope to be back here when I’m back in Crete because the food tasted good but I’d like it to be great with the freshness. Else, it was the best service experience I have had in 30 countries I have been to especially with the kind gesture of Raki and dessert.
The snail and mixed grills were good choices for a foodie especially when the waiter thought I may not be able to...
Read moreThe food was good … BUT the Service was non existent. Long waiting time, we could not eat together because the Food that was ordered was not appropriately served together. While the food that had arrived was waiting to be eaten (at that point, still warm), the food that has not but, should have arrived with the complementary dish, caused the coldness of the ordered pork chops. We were harassed by a music gang, who were very much threatening our safety. Also, we ordered 3 Liters of water. We were only served 2. 1 Liter left to fight for literally - my dear friend fought his way through waiters in order to receive the missing liter for our thirsty group. One waiter said it was a print error and it’s supposed to be 1 Liter. The printer should be blamed? I don’t think so. Poor choice of behaviour, blaming a computer for a...
