One of the most authentic traditional restaurants in the wider Paleochora area. Not a coincidence since the kitchen is the realm of the family women. Actually you can find everything here, from grilled meat (the marinated lamb chops were tender, juicy enough and moderately spicy) to casseroles and oven baked dishes like moussaka (baked eggplant and potatoes in creamy bechamel) or stuffed vegetables. The ingredients are notably fresh, mostly from local producers. Anything fried is as airy as succulent, so don't miss the kalitsounia (stuffed pies). The secret here however is fish. Pay a visit early in the afternoon and pick your choice from the rather limited catch of the day, exclusively from local waters (usually red porgy, red mullets and scorpionfish - the latter is a delicacy when grilled). We were lucky to enjoy a delicious slipper lobster (was alive and kicking on the tray). The service is cordial, straightforward and quite professional. By the way, the wine list includes some interesting labels from notable Cretan producers. Expect to pay around 100 euros for a hefty dinner (1 kg prime fish, salad, 3 starters and bottled wine). Mind you, they always offer a treat at the end, a small bottle of raki and semolina halva. Book a table on the front row by the road and enjoy the compelling views of the Cretan mountains across the...

Was recommended this restaurant from someone who had been a lot so were looking forward to it with high expectations. We arrived to a busy evening, got almost the last table. The waiter who came to take our order was so busy having a heated conversation with another waiter whilst we were mid order that he really wasn't listening to us and didnt make us feel welcome at all. This culminated in one of our meals arriving quickly but the other one not arriving until over an hour after we had sat down. We had to remind them we had ordered it and it had obviously not been put through to the kitchen properly. 1 hour 15 minutes later it arrived but one of us finished our meal before the other had even arrived. Our server was totally uninterested in us and at no time did we get an apology. It felt like we were being ignored and the whole service was so disappointing. The grilled meatball and Fries that finally arrived after 1 hr 15 mins was totally underwhelming and not worth waiting for. However the cretan salad was lovely, the vine leaves and stuffed zucchini flowers lovely but the server needs to realise he let everything down so much as he said nothing welcoming to us, no smiles, no friendliness and more importantly no apology for us having to wait so long. Cretan hospitality is amazing but...

We had our wedding ceremony, drinks reception and dinner at Methexis Taverna in Paleochora, and it was truly out of this world. 💫

From start to finish, Andreas and the team went above and beyond to make our day perfect. They helped with the setup, getting decorations and tables set up. They were on the ball and made everything run so smoothly. They were really easy to deal with and treated us and our guests with such warmth and kindness. The service was absolutely fantastic, total smooth sailing and nothing was too much trouble for them.

And the food… well it was just incredible! Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented, full of those authentic Cretan flavours we love. So many of our guests said it was the best wedding meal they’d ever had! They also catered to our veggie, gluten free, dairy free guests too.

Methexis will always hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you for making our wedding day unforgettable Andreas and team. You all are amazing 💕🇬🇷 if you are thinking of getting married in Paleochora I cannot reccomend this taverna highly...

The best restaurant in Paleochora! First, the restaurant serves the most authentic and highest quality Greek food we’ve tried in the area so far. Unlike the tourist-oriented spots in the city, this place attracts mostly locals and Greek families. The food is genuinely Greek and tasty. This was the first restaurant during our entire journey that we wanted to visit twice. The service was excellent and attentive to my wife’s vegan diet. Special thanks to Pavlos, who was very kind and gave us great recommendations. We will remember him warmly. A special note about the music—as someone who is into music, I was particularly drawn to the playlist. It sounded so authentic and true to the region that I had to ask for their Spotify playlist, which features Cretan musicians and creates a perfect atmosphere. The ambiance feels like a true Greek taverna. I highly recommend every dish because everything we tried was delicious.

Visit with my wife, whilst the service and atmosphere was brilliant with some live music it was let down by some of the food I had, Souvlaki Pork with fries, that was grissily, fatty that made it totally inedible apart from the fries. When it was pointed out to the waiter including the large piece I had to take out from my mouth whilst eating and left visible on the eating board it was served on I would have expected it to be taken of the final Bill but it wasn't. My wife chicken was dry and not the marinating we are use to. The only really good thing was the Greek Salad and Calamari with beautiful salad dressing. All I can say thank goodness all the other eating establishments my wife and I used over the 2 weeks we were here Paleocheora were of a particularly high standard our best was Palm Tree 🌴 near the Synca Supermarket
