Will avoid in the future... We chose Alaloum for a meal on the final night of a lovely Christmas & New Year break in Nafplio.
We had been here previously a couple of years ago, and unfortunately, on that occasion, I had a disappointing meal of slow-cooked rooster in wine/tomato sauce with pasta - the rooster had been incredibly dry and very hard going. Incidentally, this dish is still on the menu. However, we decided to give the place a second chance, as return visitors to the area, and based on a recommendation.
We ordered starters of giant beans and fried aubergines with tomato and cheese. These two starters were nice enough on the whole, so we had higher hopes.
Our main courses were pastitsio and chicken souvlaki. My wife's souvlaki was very dry, not at all one of the best. My pastitsio was not as expected. It did not have any beef mince or tomato - pastitsio is normally a really tasty dish. Instead, it had bacon and peppers and was also very dry, and I left a lot of it.
In general, the food was very poor, and it was actually a relief to leave, the first time I have ever felt this. Ah yes, and most of our choices were unavailable, so we had to go for second or third choices...
Read moreAbsolutely wonderful food and lovely service. We had appetizers (tzatziki and tomato croquettes) and a main course each. To our surprise, we found it to be way too much for two people. Big, hearty portions for both the starters and main courses.
The waiters were very welcoming and helpful. When deciding what to order they showed us a platter with the offered seafood, pointing out the freshly-caught critters of the day, and were able to recommend the wine to go with them.
Very tasty, hearty food. We found that all the pasta used (both the spaghetti and macaroni) is homemade, just like the dessert.
The atmosphere is, thankfully, very local. When we had our meal, at least, it wasn't chock-full of tourists. Not sure it ever is. Very pleasant, we didn't feel the need to rush at all and could enjoy our lunch in...
Read moreThis is located in the quieter part of the town, away from the popular tourist restaurant streets. Very peaceful. Service is so good! The waiters are so warm, attentive and welcoming - it made our dining experience extra special. Food is very good as well. Very large portions for a fair price. The giant beans (under specials) is tasty, with crispy toasted bread. Cold eggplant salad is highly recommended - a cool mix of flavourful eggplant in olive oil, tomatoes and nuts. Chicken in wine sauce (specials) is baked well - tender and juicy. The serving is enormous! We also had the grilled squid (seafood of the day) - extremely fresh and well grilled. All the portions are quite large - go hungry! They also serve complimentary greek yogurt in...
