I am writing this review with profound disappointment and frustration, to warn all tourists seeking authentic sushi to avoid this restaurant's so-called "Sushi Night."
First and foremost, the core issue is blatant false advertising. The restaurant promoted a "Sushi Night," but what was served did not meet any basic standard of sushi. The most unacceptable part was that the sushi that should have featured fresh, raw salmon was instead made with smoked salmon. These are two completely different ingredients and dishes; this substitution is nothing short of fraudulent.
When we questioned the server, we did not receive an apology or explanation, but rather a series of aggressive and arrogant justifications: They claimed that "Greek people are not used to raw fish" as an excuse for the substitution. However, this is a restaurant in a heavily touristic area, catering to an international clientele. Using local tastes as an excuse to serve a substandard product to tourists is the height of unprofessionalism and laziness. The server then proceeded to make personal attacks, implying that we "lack life experience abroad" and "don't understand Asian cuisine." This is utterly absurd! The ones who clearly "do not understand Asian cuisine" are the restaurant itself, for daring to use smoked salmon and call it a "Sushi Night." Most ironically, they tried to analogize by saying "opening a Greek restaurant abroad takes courage," while completely missing the central point: That "courage" must be built on a foundation of "respect" and "professionalism." If a Greek restaurant abroad bastardized traditional recipes, it would deserve the same criticism.
This restaurant's actions show a deep disrespect for Japanese culinary culture. They are exploiting the concept of "sushi" as a marketing gimmick without putting in the most basic effort to understand what it truly is. This is pure cultural disregard.
Do not waste your money and time on their "Sushi Night." Real sushi requires respect for ingredients and craft; here, you will only find complacency and arrogance.
Thank you for your response. However, it does not address the core issues raised.
The term "Sushi Night" itself is the claim. It sets a specific culinary expectation that was not met. Promoting a "Sushi Night" that does not use the fundamental ingredients of sushi (like raw fish for nigiri) is misleading, regardless of any small print. If your event exclusively uses cooked ingredients, it should be marketed accurately as such (e.g., "Cooked Sushi-style Night" or "Vegetarian Sushi Night") to avoid confusing guests.
Your response conveniently ignores the unacceptable behavior of your staff. The problem was not just the food, but the defensive, arrogant, and personal comments made when we simply asked a question. Telling a customer they "don't understand Asian cuisine" is the opposite of "respect and professionalism."
Your reply attempts to reframe a case of misleading advertising and poor service as a simple matter of personal preference. Future guests deserve full transparency about what they...
Read moreWe visited Menta Restaurant in Crete with my friends and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. We ordered three dishes, and only one came in what we would consider a normal portion size. The pasta was so small that a child could have finished it easily, and the shrimp dish came with just six thin slices of vegetables as the side — hardly enough to call it a proper meal.
When we raised our concerns with the captain, he immediately deflected responsibility, saying it wasn’t his fault because “the kitchen makes it like this.” We explained that he is the face of the restaurant and that we were unhappy, but he said he wasn’t willing to take any critique. He also told us that if he offered a discount or tried to make up for it, the cost would come out of his own pocket.
We asked to speak to the manager, but the owner/ manager was dismissive and unwilling to listen. Instead of hearing our feedback, she repeatedly told us she has “2,000 happy customers” and completely invalidated our experience. She even raised her voice at us, showing no concern that my friends were still hungry after paying for overpriced, tiny dishes.
Overall, the food was overpriced for what we received, and the service was defensive and unprofessional. The owner clearly prioritized getting paid over making sure her customers were satisfied.
I expect they will reply here with a standard message saying they are sorry and will make it better — but based on our experience, that’s just an automatic response with no real action behind it.
Genuinely very disappointed and I would not visit...
Read moreOur hotel is very close to the restaurant, and they offer beach loungers and umbrellas. The daytime service is great, beach staff is fantastic. The first few times we went for dinner, the service was fantastic - good food, good prices, and good service. 5 stars. The only problem - the evening "host" (different people perform different tasks for each table). With each visit, his misogynistic tendencies became more visible, to the point of being plain rude. As a person working with people for a living, he was unable to understand a family with different dynamics where the man was not the one making the decisions for the table, to the point of interrupting the others at the table and stating "I'm sorry, but I'm talking to the boss" (aka the man at the table). With such increasing rudeness, the evening soured and we couldn't wait to leave. It is a pity, because the other wait staff are excellent, and one person ruins the impression for the rest of the hard working team. After such an experience, we will not be coming back for dinner - 1 star. Come during the day, but also make sure to visit the other excellent...
