TL;DR: There are better options in the area. Ask a local for a good spot instead of going on Google Reviews.
We were looking for a good dinner spot and saw this place with impossibly good reviews on Google. Decided to give it a shot and were expectedly underwhelmed. Places with a rating above 4.5 rarely live up to expectations.
Food: Bread is given at the start, "free of charge". It's dry and stale. If it's served to you, do yourself a flavour and skip it. Sea bass is fresh, smoky, flavourful, solid. Good protein that's let down by just-okay potato wedges and a flimsy side salad. Octopus is average, nowhere near the grill flavour of the fish, which is a shame. The balsamic reduction drizzled over top further emphasises the lack of grill flavour. Served with average fava. We also got an anemic hospital Jell-O at the end of our meal. Again, return it if you can.
Service: Felt rushed and pressured to place an order when we first entered. They have a (not-so-functional) digital ordering system out front, and one of their staff is permanently stationed there to "guide" potential customers. Helpful, but slightly aggressive in the way they explain every item on the menu before you've had a chance to look through it. I'm sure this wasn't intentionally offensive, but they assumed we were Chinese just by looking at us, and asked us if we wanted a Chinese menu even though we are native English speakers and didn't indicate that we were Chinese throughout the menu-explaining spiel. It also took us forever to get our bill. It seemed they weren't super glad we decided not to order their strongly pushed baklava.
Atmosphere: Average. Bright and clean-looking, casual place. Again, for such a highly rated place, it's more or less empty at dinnertime. There are about three other groups here as I type this. That digital ordering system is really not great. You can't view what you've ordered without the staff having to restart the entire machine. Or maybe it was a fault of the older lady who served us, because the other servers seemed to have no issues with it....
Read moreFirst of all, the food was okay. Not bad for sure. May be slightly more expensive.
I want to talk about some minus points I came across. The food might not be worth the price. Every food item could be like 2€ less, minimum. Even 4-5€. They charged for the bread!! We have been on a trip to Italy and Athens before coming here. In most restaurants, a complimentary bread with olive oil was served and they never charged for that. When we sat at the table, they did the same and we assumed the same behavior and ate a few of them. Only when we got the bill we realized that it was included. Didn’t like that at all. When we ordered food, I was the last person to order and I immediately changed my mind and switched to some other food item than the one I said before (within 15 seconds) and the waiter/owner said he had already “sent” the order. He was using an electronic device so it might be technically correct but the kitchen was right there. I think may be he could have been more flexible. But to be honest, he did it in a fun way and I wasn’t necessarily unhappy at that moment. He strongly suggested that I had picked the better option. But now when I think about it, may be he did not want to change because the alternative I requested was cheaper. The waiter/owner also jokingly said that if we give a positive review, he would give us a 5% discount. He did such a good job that we don’t know if he was kidding or not 😂 but we didn’t want to pursue that option because we didn’t want to lie for 8€. My point is, the high ratings we see here could be because of this. But actually the true quality is not as good as they suggest.
Overall, it wasn’t bad. The owner/waiter was good at his job. He is skilled. The food was also okay. But price vs quality vs portion size is not great. Each food item felt 2-5€ more expensive than they actually worth. Just that, the place is not as great as the...
Read moreWas looking forward to a low-key, reasonably-priced, local and authentic Greek cuisine experience for my husband’s birthday. Based on reviews, Medfood seemed like it fit the bill.
Menu was extensive. Vegetarian options, too. Ordered a Greek salad and bread to start. For our two entrees, ordered the short fin squid/fried calamari and the roasted pork spare ribs. We settled for bottled water, as the wine seemed on the pricier side. (Typically we like to order just the basic house wine, nothing fancy. Perhaps the wine was top-shelf grade, or maybe just a reflection of Santorini wine prices.)
Greek salad was decent, the basic Greek salad that you would see at any restaurant. Bread came with some sort of dipping sauce, similar to tatziki, but thinner, a more watery consistency.
The fried squid was served on lettuce, with a side of lemon wedges. The consistency was chewy and salty.
The roasted pork spare ribs were my favorite - very flavorful, and “fall off the bone,” melt-in-your-mouth, kind of texture. It was served with French fries that were soaking in the meat sauce. The only disappointment is that, as a main dish, there were no other sides served with it, only the six French fries.
The restaurant was packed with customers both inside and outside. Perhaps the food was mediocre due to its dinner-hour busyness?
The staff was very friendly, and the service was great.
The decor reminded me of the kind of place that one might go to for fresh salads, freshly-pressed juices or smoothies…or an açaí bowl. For me, it gave a “healthy foods” vibe. It was clean and bright inside.
All in all, the experience was average. Had I not had such high-expectations for a low-key, authentic food, “hidden gem” type of place, it may have been a different experience.
Even though the food wasn’t what I’d expected, super appreciative of the friendly and attentive staff, and the clean...
