Munich's Restaurants | From Pork Knuckles to Historic Beer Halls

I had the pleasure of visiting an outstanding restaurant in Munich, and it has quickly become a favourite. Having dined there three times, it's become a staple on each visit to the city. What stands out immediately is the exceptionally friendly staff, who are not only well-versed in English but also in other European languages. Their helpfulness extends beyond language skills, as they are keen to offer menu recommendations and provide advice on portion sizes, ensuring you have the perfect dining experience. Among the many delightful dishes, the Eisbein deserves a special mention I had the half portion as seen in the photo provided(half is enough for one person the full sized one is MASSIVE). This dish is particularly amazing, with its perfectly crispy crackling on the fat—it's crispy but not too hard that you can't bite into it, achieving the perfect texture. The meat itself is succulent, juicy, and packed with flavour, truly embodying the excellence of the cuisine offered here. The other food at this restaurant is equally commendable. Every dish I've had has been delicious, prepared with high-quality ingredients, and presented beautifully. The service is impressively swift; there's little wait time between ordering and the arrival of your meal. Additionally, the beer selection is top-notch, featuring a variety of choices to complement the delectable food. For dessert, I would highly recommend trying the apple fritters. These delightful treats resemble little apple doughnuts, freshly fried and then flambéed with a splash of alcohol. This not only makes for a fun dining experience but also tastes incredibly good. While the restaurant is a tad pricier compared to similar establishments, the quality of the food and the exceptional service make it worth every penny. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Munich. It's a dining experience you won’t want to miss, and a place you’re bound to enjoy. Rating: 5/5 stars

Nobody can imagine the disappointment of stopping in Munich, putting my luggage in a locker at the Hauptbahnhof, sludging through the city in the cold, wet and snow only to find that my FAVORITE lunch/dinner spot in Munich for 20 years was GONE GONE GONE.....I almost started crying. Here's the backstory. I first started visiting Munich in 1987 and fell in love with the city and Bayern. As soon as I graduated college, got a job and started to travel I came to this place every time I was in Munich. I have family in Germany so now twice a year I head to Kiefersfelden to visit my little brother and his family. I stop in Munich for Lunch if it is a layover at the train station or for dinner if I am returning to fly home. Summer and winter like clockwork. On this particular trip I showed up and it was gone and I was beside myself. I went to shops next door and across the street and asked what happened. Did they move? Did they decide to stop the business? Nobody knew and nobody seemed to think it was as big a deal as I did. I tell people to go there when they visit and when people say "I'm going to Augustiner for a traditional meal when I visit" I say "don't waste your time go to Haxnbauer it's much better" So I had to get over it and find another place to eat AND THEN....this Christmas on the way to my brother's I stopped in Munich for lunch and went to another place with a friend and we just happened to walk back through the neighborhood LOOK WHO'S BACK!!!! Has a new name but still grilling meat in the window and I am hoping the food is just as good. I'd already eaten so didn't want to be a pig (no pun intended) I will be returning July 2024 to continue my 20 year tradition of lunch on the way to Kieferfelden. GO TO THIS PLACE AND EAT!!! You will NOT be disappointed.

Based on my extensive experience trying this dish in various places, this is arguably the best place to enjoy authentic Schweinshaxe in the city. Many schweinshaxe experiences have left much to be desired—some so excessively salty that one might question whether they were inadvertently consuming seawater, whilst others featured exteriors so unyieldingly hard that they seemed better suited as makeshift hammers than as an enjoyable meal. The distinction between pleasantly crisp and disappointingly tough can be rather significant, and many establishments unfortunately fall into the latter category. Haxnbauer, however, has perfected the art. Their schweinshaxe achieves the ideal balance: the exterior maintains a delightful crispness without venturing into tooth-threatening territory, whilst the interior remains remarkably tender and flavourful. The accompanying sauce complements rather than overwhelms, and the traditional Knödel (potato dumplings) offer an appropriate texture and taste that harmonises splendidly with the main attraction. The side dishes deserve special mention as well. Both the fresh salad and the sauerkraut demonstrate thoughtful preparation. The sauerkraut particularly impressed me—it avoided the excessive sourness that often plagues inferior versions, instead offering a pleasantly mild tanginess with a satisfying crunch. These accompaniments provide a well-considered counterbalance to the richness of the pork. For visitors seeking an authentic German dining experience in Munich—one that captures the essence of traditional Bavarian cuisine—Haxnbauer requires no deliberation. Haxnbauer is, in my opinion, the definitive choice.

Located within an outstanding bavarian looking unit, the restaurant gave us an impression that we are in for good stuff. And judging from the service standard of their servers, I am already prepared to give my 5-stars away. The server speaks in various languages and has a great sense of humour too. When we asked for his opinion over portion of food, he was genuine and told us to opt for smaller and economically friendly one. And he even allow a switch from potato dumpling (eeks) to rosti, which was not permitted in the menu. We had the potato soup, which was good but not great, but that doesn't matter because we came here solely for the schweinshaxe. So crispy the skin is, I took great effort to get through it but the soft juicy meat, on the contrast, simply fall away from the bone. The pork knuckle is flavourful and aromatic, and is no doubt an excellent tender piece of meat that is very well prepared. But that 1 star I took away was that 20 minutes wait time when we call for bill. Imagine missing the train because of the wait, gosh!

Traditional Bavarian food at its best in the heart of Munich. 🇩🇪🍖🍺 Place The place is decorated traditional Bavarian, you feel like being in the old germany here. Large wooden dinning room with benches and chairs. Service There are plenty of waiters all dressed traditionally as well. They speak English and they are fast to accommodate the people and also to serve. Food We had pretzel soup for starters. The broth was super tasty and the pretzel crunchy and salty. Really nice. Mains were pork knuckle and Bavarian duo(slices of pork and veal knuckle). Both came with potato dumplings, gravy and the duo with a salad. Portions are very big, and the meat was roasted to perfection with crunchy chicharrones. Delicious. Kids had turkey schnitzel with fries. Big portion, tender, well fried and breaded. 👌 For dessert we got apfelstrudel with a superior taste. 🍎 They have every kind of Bavarian beers as well as wine. We liked the place. Despite being a very touristique venue they keep the Bavarian traditions and the food is great.
