We recently stayed a few nights at the Maximilian Munich Apartments & Hotel during a visit to Munich. This is a place that seems to do well for many TA reviewers. Unfortunately, we didn't have as much luck with this property and found them to be too expensive for the quality of their studio rooms and level of service delivered.
What we liked Reservation for our Garden Studio with view of the garden was made on the Maximilian website 5 months prior to our stay. Email confirmation for reservation was sent immediately. We were expected and well received by front desk staff upon arrival and provided expected luggage storage until our room was studio was ready later in the day.
There were internet connection problems during our stay. One particular front desk staff was very responsive to us and other guests who were having problems. That was appreciated.
The location of this property is quite good. The neighbourhood is quiet and you are a 5 minute walk to the main sightseeing areas of the Old Town. The Isartor Station is a similar distance which is nice if you want to use public transportation to/from the airport or other areas of the city during your stay.
Our studio was 33 square metres, providing plenty of size and space for luggage and moving around in our room. Room decor was rather bright and furniture decent. Sofa was of decent comfort, sitting chairs and table just fine. Bed was comfortable, providing good sleep during our stay. Bathroom shower pressure was nice and housekeeping was also good.
Kitchenette while too small to make effective use for cooking, did include an espresso machine. Capsules were replenished each day. This was appreciated.
What we didn't like so much Our room was supposed to be Garden Studio with view of the rose garden and we paid a very high price (€365 per night) for this room type. Unfortunately, the room we were given was a forth floor attic space studio. It was nowhere near the actual Garden nor were there direct views of the rose garden from within our room. Instead, from the room we could only see other building tops (see submitted photos).
As a side note, our studio did have a tiny balcony space from which you could look down into the rose garden. As such, technically speaking, there was a view down to the garden from the balcony, just not from a vantage point that was interesting nor from within the room itself. Unfortunately, it was the garden view pictures and room descriptions provided on the website that contributed to our choosing this property. This wasn't the experience we had from the 4th-floor studio at all.
Room included a small kitchenette area. Unfortunately, it was compact with very little room to prepare food for cooking. We found it ok for serving ready prepared foods (meats, cheeses, etc) but not so good for cooking. There was limited space for washing and cleaning up dishes as well.
Room includes a safe but it one of the very small varieties, large enough for passports, cash and folded documents but no chance of fitting laptops inside. The toilet in our bathroom had a weak flush, we need not go into the details on this one. To add to the list of issues encountered, as mentioned earlier, we had no internet connection for 1 of the 3 days at the property.
Lasting Impression In the end, we didn't hate this property but were disappointed with the studio we were given. It wasn't what we expected and had too many shortcomings to warrant the high room rate we were changed.
Having stayed at another Munich property during this holiday that was a much nicer place and less than half the price, we returned home feeling that Maximilian Munich Apartments & Hotel wasn't good value for money nor a property we would be interested in staying at again...
Read moreStayed four nights at the Maximilian. Our room (#65) was on the second floor (no lift in this building; one 16-step flight of stairs) with a balcony overlooking a beautiful garden with a pleasantly flowing fountain. I loved the lion statue in the garden. As others have mentioned, the garden is a welcome respite from the hordes of visitors closer to the Marienplatz. Very quiet. The balcony had a small coffee table and two chairs with cushions. Upon check-in, the young clerk carried our luggage up the stairs to our room and advised that the breakfast costs €24/person and to just go in, take a seat and a server will help you. It would have been helpful to have had the lighting system explained because we discovered that the lights are dimmable by holding down on the switches. We could not find any English-speaking television stations. Breakfast cost €24/person as noted, but I can’t comment on the value because the one time my wife and I tried to eat in the breakfast room, the wait staff completely ignored us, so we left. ||The room was like a studio apartment with a small kitchen with stovetop, microwave (with touch controls with no explanations of the odd symbols and located fairly high up over the sink), dishes (located in a cabinet above the microwave that only a tall person could reach), cutlery and cooking utensils, hotpot and expresso machine, and small refrigerator stocked with beverages that can be purchased. The refrigerator was large enough for us to add items that we purchased elsewhere. The king size bed was comfortable although we were not fans of the pillows. The bathroom was nice with a shower/tub combo (a bit odd because the glass door opened into the tub making it somewhat hard to access the shower). Much to my delight, the toilet included a bidet feature. Washcloths were present the first day, but service staff never replaced them when towels were refreshed. Drawers in the bathroom provided ample space for storing cosmetics. Hot water to the bathroom sink was instant. Wifi worked well as did the AC. For those visiting in the winter, the floors are heated. A call for ice took about two hours to be delivered on a warm afternoon. It was promised in 30 minutes, so it seems the ice maker was slow. ||The Maximilian is located about a ten-minute walk from the Marienplatz (can hear the glockenspiel in the New Town Hall when sitting on the balcony) and Marienplatz train station. Easy to access the S2 train for Dachau for a day trip from that station (M-1 ticket covers round-trip train and bus fares to the concentration camp). For those wishing to cook or just get snacks or beverages, a grocery store (Rewe Market) is a short walk from the hotel. An Italian restaurant is located on the corner and a pastry shop is across the plaza (now under construction) next to the Mandarin Oriental hotel.||We recommend the Maximilian for its quiet ambiance, lovely garden, nice room and accessible location for those...
Read moreWe stayed here twice, bookending a two-week visit of several cities. Our first stay was very unpleasant, and our second stay was fantastic — the rooms varied HEAVILY in quality and the front desk personnel are mostly great, except for one daytime person who made our first stay miserable. ||That staff member was very rude when I was first checking in — she kept stopping my check in and ignoring me to talk with other people about non-work topics (how their day was etc.) and complained whenever we had questions or needed help with something (“we’ve done so much for you, we gave you a free upgrade” — which we didn’t ask for and which was actually less good than our originally booked rooms, and she used that upgrade as an excuse to not help us later with specific issues, like the fridge). During our second stay, staff was exceptional, which suggests there was one bad apple creating a very toxic customer experience. We checked in and out outside of normal business hours on our second stay, and the late evening / early morning staff are LOVELY people. ||Despite the online listing stating there’s a fully functioning kitchenette, there is NOT a functioning mini fridge in the “new building,” just a drink cooler. You cannot keep, for example, milk or yogurt in it. This was not made clear when booking and is also not what a “fully functioning kitchenette” means. In our second stay, in the main building, we had great fridges that worked perfectly. So, some amenities are only available in some rooms. Be warned. ||The Wifi didn’t work our first stay — seems like it doesn’t reach the new building — but was fine our second stay, in the old building. Again, some amenities are only available in some rooms. ||The full building was under construction our entire stay — the “garden view” is just of scaffolding and there are not places to sit outdoors in the garden as advertised. Loud construction sounds started early in the morning. ||Our first stay also felt…invasive. On our first day, they delivered the wrong luggage to my room — someone else’s luggage — which is deeply concerning from a security perspective. I had the do not disturb / no housekeeping sign up, and housekeeping still came in and rearranged all of my things. It took me hours to find all of my valuables, and some items were permanently lost, like my prescription eyedrops which can’t be replaced while abroad. The same front desk person kept pushing her way into our rooms throughout our trip, which was very, VERY uncomfortable. ||Finally, on our first stay, we were erroneously charged €18 for the “complementary” waters in our room, which we did not drink, adding insult to an already injurious stay. ||Our second stay felt like an entirely different hotel experience — I can understand why reviews here are so divisive. The hotel clearly has HUGE quality control issues and some...
